Morbius (2021) review: A very well written movie ruined by terrible action scenes shoved in by the big corporation behind it.

Morbius is a masterfully written movie. I found that the dialogue felt realistic and entertaining, a balance that few filmmakers can successfully strike. The plot was exciting and suspenseful, but at the same time moody and emotional. However, the ending and the action scenes, two things that you know Marvel had a hand in made it fall apart. You and I know the standard for Marvel is to make a mid movie held together by action scenes. In this case, it's the opposite. Morbius is an 8.5/10 movie ripped apart by bad action scenes. The ending was also fucked for bad sequel bait, that much is obvious. Overall, 4/10.

REVIEW: Morbius - It's Matt Smith's World, Jared Leto Just Lives In It

Morbius, directed by Daniel Espinosa and written by Matt Sazama & Burk Sharpless, is the next installment in Sony's Marvel universe.

The film follows Dr. Michael Morbius (Jared Leto) as he works to uncover a cure for him and his best friend since childhood Milo (Matt Smith), but this discovery leads to dangerous consequences in the form of a newfound thirst for blood along that comes along with their new power and strength.

There is a brief glimmer of a fun, sometimes campy, adventure with tones of horror within Morbius, but this never fully comes to fruition.

Pacing and Performances

Morbius spends time establishing the world and its characters, which does add depth to the story, but also allows the audience to know that Morbius as a character, especially performed by Jared Leto is not as interesting as we would like.

The main feeling I had throughout watching Morbius is how my attention shifted when Milo was introduced again in the present day, played by Matt Smith. There was much-appreciated energy to his performance.

I could understand from earlier moments how he would become the villain of the film, but still seeing the remnants of the boy we were introduced to in the beginning of the film. There was a charm, while also showcasing a glimmer of hatred and anger within the character.

When Milo takes matters into his own hands, ignoring the consequences, it does not feel out of place, and leads to some wonderfully campy and bright moments of Milo exploring his new powers. The energy Matt Smith brings to the role is captivating and kept me engaged throughout, while other aspects of the film hindered from complete enjoyment.

Adria Arjona is not given much time to explore her character Martine Bancroft, who is underwritten and underutilized. Martine is not explored much outside her relationship with Morbius, and even this does not get much focus within the film. She is a doctor and we have a few moments of her interacting with patients, but for most of the film, she is largely pushed aside.

Effects and Horror Tone

Some of the moments of horror within Morbius really land and build suspense in a natural and exciting way, but these moments are too few and too far apart, leading to most of the action within the film to feel more relegated to the 'superhero' zone.

Even so, some of the visuals within those more superpower-focused fights were fun, especially when the film really played with color instead of focusing on white, grey, and black smoky tendrils. The moments where bolder colors such as blue, purple, and orange were used gave life to these action-centric moments.

The horror within the film worked well--when it was present. We could blame the rating and say the PG-13 hindered the horror, and maybe that has something to do with it, but that somewhat does a disservice to the wonderfully gory and memorable PG-13 horror films that have been made before this.

One aspect of the horror that did not land well for me comes in the depiction of Morbius. With a film exploring morality and showcasing characters who are not seen as fully heroes or villains, it is important that both characters--the seemingly good and bad--need to have similar moments of menace.

I personally never felt any danger coming off Morbius outside his first transformation. There are so many ways the film could have explored his dilemma more, his moments of blacking out.

Personally, I feel more menace from Chicklet not knowing what she's done in Psycho Beach Party. Morbius does not explore the full potential of the character and his reluctant, uneasy connection with this new, dangerous part of himself.

Visuals and Music

Morbius has some visual moments that work well and recall an earlier decade of horror and the superhero, especially the moment in the hospital hallway.

The film has standout moments, but overall, the visual style is underwhelming--I couldn't tell if the top of the screen was messed up, or if one corner of the frame was always tinted teal.

With the music, I enjoyed how it pulsating with the action scenes. But the music seemed to be at this very high, harsh level throughout most of the movie.

This intensity of sound would have worked better if regulated to specific moments of action rather than used throughout the film for any moment with even the semblance of tension.

Conclusion

Morbius sometimes works great, but these memorable moments are spaced too sporadically throughout the film. It's worth watching to see the delightful performance from Matt Smith, who perfectly balances the campiest moments with the most emotionally resonant.

My Review (with MINOR spoilers, but nothing huge):

Here’s what I liked about Morbius: The cinematography in some scenes was actually really cool, the graphics at the beginning and end of the movie are gorgeous, and the final battle was pretty fun to watch. There’s even a couple of solid jump scares. That’s where the compliments stop.

Usually when it comes to critics vs. audience, I tend to side with the audience - especially with Sony Marvel movies. I loved both the Venom movies. However...Morbius was exactly as bad as the critics have been saying. I saw one review that said something like “this movie feels like it was written by a middle-aged crisis, recently divorced Gen X-er who hadn’t seen a superhero movie since 2002″ and that’s pretty much it. This movie is far from the worst movie I’ve seen...but it is in no way a good movie.

The movie starts out kind of strong and then goes downhill quickly from there. There’s no plot development. There’s not even really a plot? He’s working on a cure to his illness, it backfires, he has to stop his friend who also tried the cure, the end. There’ no plot and there’s no character development either. The characters are all surface level and sooooo boring. Matt Smith’s character was the best part of the movie and even his character was flat and one-dimensional.

Jared Leto overacted and then some, and Matt Smith’s acting was WASTED on this movie. There’s one female character and she’s laid up in the hospital for half the movie, and is in distress every other time she’s on screen. The special effects and makeup that make the guys look like vampires? Laughable. That’s not an exaggeration, I actually laughed. The scene where full-vamp Matt Smith is running towards Leto? They have him run in slow-mo and it goes on so much longer than it needs to that it actually starts to look silly. The special effects are also a bit too campy for the serious tone of the movie.

Overall Takeaway: The trailer was better. The actual movie had no plot, no deep connection to the characters, no concrete ending (seriously, the ending was so dumb, as were the post-credit scenes). The pacing was all over the place. I was on my phone for parts of it because I was so bored. Definitely will not be watching ever again, I’m good.

Morbius is a 2 of 10 for me

Honestly, not sure what to say. And I think rating it with 2 feels being generous just because I like Marvel and I want to like every of their movies and them to be good. But it just isn't any good.

Absolutely inconsequent and with big logical errors and plot holes.

Morbius struggling with blood thirst in one scene and a few moments later he is unbothered around much more blood. Morbius is struggling because he is in prison and has no access to blood and a few moments later he is still without blood but totally fine. Morbius wanna end his life because he can't control himself, he loses every single person that matters to him: the father figure, the somewhat brother and the love interest but just decides to not go through with his plan to meet randomly with a stranger from another universe in a robot like flying suite? Like wtf? Just nonsense...

Don't get me started on the bad CGI, the bad action and fighting scenes. Were they bad? Idk, because there is actually nothing to see, like literally you cannot see any of the fighting because it's all just a blurry mess.

Not taking the time for any origin stories, for building up any tension or emotions or feelings. To feel a real connection to any of the characters or at least between them. It's all so forced.

Other movies also have logical mistakes or bad CGI but you can look over it, if it is funny or emotional or thrilling or entertaining or just catches you with whatever. But here, none of it, this movie didn't gave me anything.

I didn't even had high expectations for this movie, but they managed to undercut them big time.

WELL THAT WAS... a movie. 🤷🏼‍♀️

First some non-spoilery bits:

Fair game: it wasn't as bad as expected.

Childish as fucking hell (those flying scenes... c'mon now... 🙄) but it was watchable.

ONCE!

Nooooooo way am I ever sitting through that again! ✋️🙄

Performances: sorry echeboos but your boy SUCKED AAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSS. 🤦🏼‍♀️

No life in him whatsoever (pun intended!). 😴

He was at least a tad bit less catatonic than in TO, but that's not much of a compliment! He once again busted out that Barry White baritone which he uses to show how ssssssserious he is about what he's doing. 🙄

Matt Smith by comparison was 🔥. He really out-acted JL in every scene he appeared in - and his performance actually only highlighted how lackluster JL was. 🤦🏼‍♀️

MS's acting grade: A- because he gave his all even tho the material was 🙄.

JL's acting grade: C because he gave TOO MUCH without actually giving anything! 🤷🏼‍♀️

I just don't get it! Maybe it's because I know too much of his bs to ever be able to be objective about him on screen but holy fuck once again he seemed to be operating on a whole different frequency from everyone else! 🤷🏼‍♀️

And as far as Not-Eiza goes...

Pfffft. Useless character and zero chemistry with JL. 👎

Also useless: Tyrese. Literally ANYONE could have played that role, and his police partner was actually a lot better and funnier! 🤷🏼‍♀️

I have no opinion on the much-hated CGI because I don't watch CGI movies. I have no idea if they were good or not.

I would however love to see footage of JL growling and contorting his face while filming this thing BEFORE they added the CGI fangs and makeup and whatnot! I bet that footage would be better than this finished product! 😂

So yeah. It was watchable, but even I with 0 comic book movie knowledge can understand why diehards were not pleased. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Overall I'd give this a 6/10. It would have been a 5 but 1 special scene deserves its own merit (read on to find out! 😛).

And speaking of screenwriting errors: anyone else find it strange that towards the end when MM and MB were in the lab, they embrace and he said "You need to go...", but then HE WAS THE ONE WHO LEFT. 😂

I found that hilarious... 😂🤷🏼‍♀️

But wtf were those extra scenes in the credits?! I thought I was having a stroke cos suddenly there was Batman being whisked away by cops (why the f was Keaton even dragged out for this?!) and then Morblo speeding in the desert and meeting some alien robot thing...???

Saying that was weird is an extreme understatement... 😳🤔

My Top 3 fave scenes were:

#3: The scene where adult MM goes to see adult Milo for the first time and he's getting treated by the doc and they had a discussion smthg along the lines of:

Milo: "Where have you been?"

MM: "I'm trying this new thing called work, I'm sure you've never heard of it..."

Milo: "No I don't believe I have."

Went to see morbius last night and holy shit where do I begin? Well...I suppose the performances were...okay I guess?

I feel like I'm the only person who had a problem with Matt smiths performance. I just...he was so goddamn cringe. I really felt second hand embarrassment for the guy. Which really sucks because he looks like he's having fun.

Jared Leto is just...Jared Leto. I think he's kinda redeemed himself from the whole joker fiasco, which is good. He wasn't too edgy thank the gods but at the same time like...where's the angst dude? There was some humanity there I guess but it felt like a lot of heart was missing.

Adria Arjona was pretty good. I found her character to be kinda shoehorned in though. I was actually really hoping we'd get Felicia Hardy in this movie but no such luck. Her performance was good, but I felt her character was somewhat unnecessary and the romance between her and Morbius just felt unnatural and forced.

The story was all over the place and a mess. I felt ripped off. I feel ripped off. This movie got delayed what, two years, and we got this miserable, cringey pile of miserable dreck? Well...it wasn't Joker at least. Still haven't forgiven Joaquin Phoenix for that...🙄
