The city had been beckoning them for too long, the traffic clamour, the riot of heat leaving porous brick glittering in the sunlight, the tick of stilettos on cement and the suited commuters on their way to Wall-street, the apron wearing cash attendant- the life of the place had called for much too long. Inside Karen’s flat, they had whispered about what they could do, about candlelit meals, and days beyond the steel-grey of the evening enclosed in four walls- but it had never come to fruition. Not until now. Wesley’s stomach twisted, a knot of adrenalin fuelled excitement and nausea forming as he stood, waiting beside a confectionery stand (the smell of hotdogs, the saccharine sweet cotton-candy and smoke from the grills working on that every tightening knot).
He checked his watch, watched the tick-tock of time passing before a he sighed once, lips pursing as he decided she wasn’t coming. It had been too grand a plan, too much was at stake: a day at Coney Island was too dangerous an endeavour to pursue for two people desperately trying not to get caught. Admittedly he should have expected it, dreams were best left for when the sheets tangled around them in the cool morning light, and they mumbled what could be if life hadn’t ended up this way. Raising his head to take a final glance (only to confirm the lack of her presence) he made to move, jolting to an abrupt halt as he noticed a familiar face among the crowds and he couldn’t help but smile in response.
“And there I thought you’d stood me up.”
