@newbeaconbooks with The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead won the National Book Award 2016 and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction 2017. Cora is a slave on a cotton plantation in Georgia. All the slaves lead a hellish existence, but Cora has it worse than most; she is an outcast even among her fellow Africans and she is approaching womanhood, where it is clear even greater pain awaits. When Caesar, a slave recently arrived from Virginia, tells her about the Underground Railroad, they take the perilous decision to escape to the North. In Whitehead's razor-sharp imagining of the antebellum South, the Underground Railroad has assumed a physical form: a dilapidated box car pulled along subterranean tracks by a steam locomotive, picking up fugitives wherever it can. Cora and Caesar's first stop is South Carolina, in a city that initially seems like a haven. But its placid surface masks an infernal scheme designed for its unknowing black inhabitants. And even worse: Ridgeway, the relentless slave catcher sent to find Cora, is close on their heels. Forced to flee again, Cora embarks on a harrowing flight, state by state, seeking true freedom. At each stop on her journey, Cora encounters a different world. As Whitehead brilliantly recreates the unique terrors for black people in the pre-Civil War era, his narrative seamlessly weaves the saga of America, from the brutal importation of Africans to the unfulfilled promises of the present day. The Underground Railroad is at once the story of one woman's ferocious will to escape the horrors of bondage and a shatteringly powerful meditation on history. 📚 Available in store and on our website NOW! 📚 Open Tues - Sat: 11am to 6pm Thursday: 11am -8pm 📚 Please encourage your friends and family to like and follow us on Facebook, Twitter and instagram @newbeaconbooks 📚 New Beacon Books - Continuing 50 years of history........ 📚 #newbeaconbooks #childrensbooks #Continuing50yearsofhistory #BlackActivist #JohnLaRose #Trinidad #AfricanBooks #CaribbeanBooks #bookshop #BlackBooks #PanAfrica #BlackHistory #AfricanPeople #SupportBlackBusinesses #Culture #StolenFromAfrica #MoreThanSlaves #caribbeanhistory

“But, of course, trolls had to be trolls, and many of them took to social media to refute Obama’s claim that slaves built the White House. Maybe it’s because America’s limited view of slavery is sweaty black people in cotton fields.” The erasure of my ancestors’ narratives, experiences, and contributions to this country have been perpetuated for far too long. When was this taught in school? Because the only thing I can remember reading about slavery growing up were short, sporadic paragraphs in 500 page books about the trauma slaves endured shortly up to post Antebellum. In some history classes the topic of slavery wasn’t even mentioned. The trolls can stay mad while many continue to unapologetically unveil truths of American history. After being burdened to continuously dig up and discover that history which has been white-washed and essentially made inaccessible to us, predating the internet.
