Enriching and chilling tour of the Slave Haven Underground Railroad Museum. The Burkle Family came from Germany, built this house, and added it to the route of the Underground Railroad. These are the smiles of people enjoying public transit.
Black women are disproportionately killed in domestic violence related homicides here in Oklahoma. We are only 7.8% of the population yet in intimate partner violence homicides we make up 17% of those who are victimized. Side note: there is currently no local data on the race of the perpetrators of this violence. I'm so excited to have been invited to serve on the Domestic Violence Review Board's subcommittee alongside other Black and Brown women to collaborate on designing services, outreach, and resources that make sense for us and our unique experiences.
So proud of one of my good friends, mentor, and just overall favorite human in the whole entire world, Gina. She has worked so hard to preserve, restore, and raise awareness over one of OKC's most precious gems: Page Woodson. She helped get this building on the historical registry years ago which has helped protect it from the all to common practice of demolition or leaving buildings to decay in our community. She has collected and shared stories. Taken pictures. Documented history. Researched. Presented. She helped lead this project every step of the way through her engineering firm all while being in grad school and being an amazing friend to everyone she essentially comes across. Now younger and older generations of Oklahomans will get to experience this familiar building in a whole different way. This is Black Excellence. This is my dear friend Gina's work and I had fun celebrating her, her team, and Page Woodson being a step closer to being finished. (at Page Woodson)
