Casino night at the College of Wooster!
COLLEGE OF WOOSTER:
Another great day has come to an end here at the College of Wooster! In order to beat the rain, we started up singles instruction right at 9AM this morning as we introduced the idea of zone tennis in which we split the court into three areas: the defensive zone, control zone and the offensive zone. We will continue to focus on zone tennis as the week goes on and hopefully many of the campers will begin to incorporate it into their game long after they leave camp. Unfortunately during the zone tennis demonstration, Coach Erik decided that the entire court was the offensive zone. As you can imagine, the demonstration turned out poorly for Erik and for all of those who had to witness it.
In addition, we continued our College Cup Tournament with many of the matches coming down to the wire--winners of the College Cup will have some cool prizes coming at the awards ceremony. With some heavy rain coming in the late afternoon, we were fortunate enough to move right inside and not miss a beat of the College Cup Tournament. We have defeated Mother Nature yet again.
We ended today’s camp with the always popular casino night at The Underground on campus. Games included poker, black jack, uno, roulette, dice, mini tennis and many others. Many lucky campers who stacked their chips high went home with some nice Wilson gear and an array of different snacks. I saw one of the boxes of Dots missing--Coach Andrew is the prime suspect in the crime. After Casino Night, we headed back to the dorm lounge for the day’s main event...the reading of the 8AM matches by Coach James. The 8AM match readings have gotten more elaborate as the camp has gone on and i’m sure he’ll have something special in store for the final reading tomorrow night. Looking forward to another great day of tennis starting bright and early!
Week 2 of Match Play Camp is underway at the College of Wooster!
COLLEGE OF WOOSTER:
We are back for our final week of Match Play Camp at the College of Wooster and ready to finish camp season on a strong note! With a bit of rain delaying our outdoor tennis play, we headed to the indoor courts to start up camper skill evaluations and also for a brief camp orientation. During the camp orientation, Director David introduced himself and his fellow staff members and as always, staff personality is off the charts here at the College of Wooster--mainly because Coach Shannon has returned from her brief hiatus in Canada (she always seems to be one of the favorite coaches).
After getting a full afternoon session in, we headed to Lowry for an always delicious dinner. Lowry has been known to be the equivalent of Morton’s Steakhouse for college cafeterias--ask around, it’s legendary. We then headed back to the courts to start off camp instruction by going over a couple of fundamental singles strategies including changing the direction of the ball and how to be more offensive from the baseline. Thankfully Coach Jacob and Andrew did the drill demonstrations today instead of Coach Tyler. Tyler has had a rough couple weeks of conducting on court demonstrations and has been dubbed by previous campers as the “Mayor of Shank City.” Keep your head up Tyler, it’ll all be okay.
We are capping off the night with some ice cream down in the basement lounge. Looking forward to getting back on the courts bright and early in the morning!
Beating the rain for a full day of tennis at the College of Wooster!
COLLEGE OF WOOSTER:
With the radar looking a bit gloomy in the afternoon, we decided to have an extended morning session in order to get as much time on the outdoor courts as rain would allow. Lucky for us, the rain did not arrive until after dinner and by that time we had already gotten nearly six hours of tennis in after the afternoon session. Today we reviewed a number of single strategies introduced earlier in the week and moved on to new doubles strategies including how to maneuver on the court as a cohesive unit and not as two individuals. Teamwork always beats individuality in doubles--words to live by on the court!
Throughout our long, hard-working day of tennis we had many breaks but only one unplanned break happened when a small swarm of bees decided to start hovering around one of the end courts (don’t worry all campers and staff immediately left the vicinity and the bees were soon sprayed away--huge thank you to the always helpful grounds crew here on campus!). So it appears that despite nature clearly being against us today with the bee invasion and the rain later on, we still were able to have a full day of tennis and came out on top. Mother Nature, we here at the College of Wooster have defeated you yet again.
After resting up a bit after dinner, campers and staff headed to a campus hangout called “The Underground” located right by the dorms to hold the famous Casino Night! Games such as Black Jack, Roulette, Dice, Uno and many others were all featured and many campers who stacked up a large amount of chips went home with an array of prizes at the end. Looking forward to getting back at it on the courts tomorrow for our last full day of camp!
First session of Match Play Camp at the College of Wooster is underway!
COLLEGE OF WOOSTER:
The first session of Match Play Camp here at the College of Wooster has finally started. As campers made their way to campus for check in, they were greeted by Director David and his always enthusiastic staff members to jumpstart the first week of match play. To kick off the opening afternoon session, campers were given a brief orientation on what we will be focusing on this week. Throughout the afternoon session, campers were evaluated to give staff members a better idea of their specific skill levels.
After an extended afternoon session, we were back on the courts again to kick off the College Cup Tournament. Campers were split into eight college teams with each team having at least one staff member as their coach. For the first time ever, David allowed the campers to pick their own college teams and offered a reward to the team that came up with the most interesting school. I didn’t even realize this school existed but Coach Kiara and her team decided on the University of North Carolina School of the Arts---their mascot is the Fighting Pickle. The creativity of both the campers and staff members certainly appears to be flowing this week.
We capped off the night with the always competitive game of capture the flag. As usual the girl campers teamed up with the male coaches to take home the victory over the boys and Coach Kiara--keeping the 3 week winning streak alive. We then headed back to the dorm for some ice cream before bed check. The all camp singles tournament starts tomorrow morning at 8 and will continue throughout the week. The champion will go home with a brand new pair of beats headphones! Back on court bright and early!
