O Captain, my Captain
Zero Tolerance Tuesday - Coach Dave’s favorite day of the week. With 25+ years running the camp, he has come to learn, that Tuesday is the hardest day of the week for kids to be motivated and energetic. No worries, we love the challenge 😀
Boy did we not know what we were getting into - haha. These kids have resolve - urgh, stubbornness, or something in between. This was going to be a hassle. A morning session that started with some sleepy campers on the bleachers needed a shake up. How about the ole - 30 second ball pick up. That should do the trick. Not so fast, my friend. Again, this groups has resolve. Ok, Let’s get their attention with the staff doing the ole ball pick up drill....now, we are starting to see some laughs and attention. Who would have thought that working the staff would have motivated these kids so much? Little Devils they are.
Ok, Zero Tolerance Tuesday is going to be a challenge. New terms came to light today. Who new that sudden forgetfulness is called “Ariel-itis”. It appears to be infecting certain campers under 11 years old and under...as well as staff member Aliyah, Cassie, Janelle and Austin. Gotta get this under control
Well one thing for sure, the “Twinkies” - our young crew of Grier, Amelia, Lucca and Lucas will bring the energy (as well as some smiles).
So we have Twinkies, “Ariel-itis”, Casino Night Black Tie affair ( strictly adhered to by one long time camper sporting a dashing suit for the big event), with a heavy dosage of serves, returns and backhands and we have a pretty full day.
Carpe Diem never looked so good at the Wooster camp. Now if we can just get the kids to stop running in the hall, we will finally execute the Zero tolerance part of Tuesday. Wemight need to rename this day, “Somewhat lower tolerance Tuesday - as long as they campers agree to comply”. Just doesn’t have the same ring to it, however. Well there is always - Wild and Wacky Wednesday ( no way we are opening up that can of worms on this crew).
O Captain, my Captain. Who knows where that comes from? Anybody? Not a clue? It's from a poem by Walt Whitman about Mr. Abraham Lincoln. Now in this class you can either call me Mr. Keating, or if you're slightly more daring, O Captain my Captain.

We ain’t afraid of no ghosts
...and we are not afraid of a little rain either. The camp got off to an uncertain start as the heavy flooding from Sunday night carried over into the morning session. No problem at all for camp director David and his staff. As we are like to do that just provided an opportunity for an earlier start.
A last minute decision was made to move the morning session up from our traditional 9am start to an 815 kickoff. We cannot believe how excited the kids were with this decision. Who would have known how much they enjoy getting up earlier ;-).
2 hours in the Scot Center on the indoor courts videotaping their forehands and perfecting their technique and their was great optimism of putting the rain in the rear view mirror. The afternoon session was back outside and culminated in two long play sessions or our popular College Cup team tournament.
Even tennis followed a short dinner time break and we put the finishing touches on the evening with an All Camp Capture the Flag game. The girls have been getting the best of the boys so far this summer and we will see if that trend continues.
Tuesday looks to be a beautiful day and we will continue work on Backhands (introduced on Monday afternoon) and some concentrated focus on the serve. Another busy day lies ahead.
We will have our weekly photo shoot on Tuesday afternoon, so check back here and on Facebook ( http://www.facebook.com/wilsontenniscamps ) to see the first set.
Now back to those ghosts. What is that all about? Coach Aliyah is convinced that she is being followed by such a nemesis and Coach Adi has volunteered to bring a Oiji board to camp, but the rest of us just know that the voices Aliyah keeps hearing is that of Coach Janelle, who never leaves her side and is rarely at a loss for words. BTW - as Aliyah has been told....Ghosts don’t giggle (but boy does Janelle).
Jamie - Get the Boat
What a day of rain we enjoyed here in Wooster. What has come to be known internally as “The Summer of Flood”, the rainiest summer in Wooster camp history continues.
The kids got on the courts on time yesterday afternoon and we were able to get our player evaluations completed. About 1:15 into our practice, just like the Beatles song says...”Here comes the Rain” (or maybe we have that wrong). The rain came, continued, stopped for 10 minutes and started up again. Wow, “Jamie - Get the Boat, we have to get the kids to dinner”. 2 false starts later, we were into the “alternative camp schedule.”
* The above photo was captured on the boat trip to dinner at Lowry last night - JK
An early dinner later (who eats dinner at 4:30pm?), and a quick turnaround and off to the Scot Center for some indoor tennis. Lo and behold we got our full tennis in with an emphasis on the forehand.
A camp meeting and ice cream party later, and the kids were off to bed. However, not so lucky for the staff, as constant phone alerts to flooding in the area kept at least one staff member up way past his urgh, their bedtime.
Monday morning promises to be a little challenging on the weather front as well, but then we should be smooth sailing for the rest of the week - knock on wood.
Zero Tolerance Tuesday - Wooster
Today the campers endured everyones favorite day of camp (for the Camp Director at least), Zero Tolerance Tuesday. Now that the campers have become more comfortable in their dorms and with our schedule there is absolutely, 100 percent, no tolerance for slacking. This morning the campers demonstrated a strong work ethic as they quickly caught on to what Zero Tolerance Tuesday can entail.
Today was another long day for the campers, some playing up to three matches, but they persevered through the humidity.
During our morning session after our routine singles warm up, we focused on serving down the middle and the importance of moving through the gate when returning. After a fabulous lunch in Lowry we continued with our tournament matches followed by our doubles session. In our afternoon doubles session we again worked on volleying on the same side of the body and ended with a fun game where winners won extra raffle tickets for our much anticipated Wilson raffle on Thursday! The campers even have the chance to win a custom Wilson racket!
Today we won the fight versus Mother Nature until the second set of College Cup matches this evening. Almost through the entire match a storm rolled in. Those lucky campers who didn’t finish their matches will get to play at 7:30am tomorrow!
For our social activity we headed to The Underground, a social space on campus for casino night! The campers enjoyed everything from free popcorn and soda to corn hole and roulette. Those campers with the highest number of chips at the end of the night were able to pick from our wide selection of Wilson prizes! The winner of the evening was Gabi with more than 150 chips!
Stay tuned for another showdown tomorrow with our sometimes friendly, Mother Nature.
Forehands, Footwork & The Fear of Rain.
The kids got their money’s worth on Monday. With some lucky campers spending almost 7 hours working on their games, we do anticipate some tired troopers for our ever popular ( meaning only enjoyed by the camp director) “Zero Tolerance Tuesday”.
Monday’s morning emphasis was on developing the intangibles and showing the kids just how important proper practice techniques are. A key focus was placed on playing with energy & enthusiasm. Concepts included playing 70% of the court as a forehand, playing through the middle in singles and keeping the feet moving at all times. (Make sure you ask you kids if they understand why cars get better gas mileage on the highway than in the city - we had a few doozy answers to this one). Finally in the morning, we talked about the 3 H’s. Head (being smart), Heart (playing with passion) and Hand (talent and strokes).
Afternoon switched focus to doubles and three areas of emphasis that we will feature. 1) Playing at the Net & the Modern Volley, 2) Two people working as 1 unit and 3) Playing down the middle and up the lines. We introduced a new warmup for doubles and made sure we start building muscle memory to play in “Straight lines” on the doubles court. We closed out the afternoon session with our emphasis on the first three shots (Serve, Return and 1st volley)
Wow, what a day. With anticipated rain in the forecast, we put the kids through the paces. Not only starting our highly popular Match Play championships, but in many cases getting 2 rounds of matches in the books.
We also included our first photo shoot of the week and all kids were invited to come and join the shoot. A low turnout will result in a second shoot today. All the camp photos so far can be found on our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/wilsontenniscamps. Give us a “Like” while you are there.
About halfway through our evening session college cup matches a shower came and ruined our plans (urgghhh). Play was suspend about 7pm and will be made up on Tuesday (you thought Monday was long). Matches were picked up at 7:30 am, which I am sure all you parents can grasp just how excited the kids were to play that early. I believe I heard the phrase “what a treat” 😀 Who would have known.
We have a good bunch of kids this week, both on the courts and off and a few of our “frequent fliers” are up to try and challenge David and the staff. With new authority figure “Uncle Mitch” leading the way, I don’t like the campers chances.
Tuesday will feature another long day of tennis as we try and beat the rain again. 99% of the time, we win, but with the paranoia of our Match Play I complete victory for Mother Nature fresh in our minds, we are leaving nothing to chance.
Stay tuned as the week features the heavyweight match of WCTC vs. Mother Nature!

The Final Match Play Week Begins...
The FINAL match play week at the College of Wooster began yesterday. After a brief welcome and orientation to camp, the campers were able to go through some of our singles warm up and play a game of bump to complete our skills evaluation for the day. This session was focused on evaluations to make sure each camper has the best experience.
Following a scrumptious Lowry Center dinner we kicked off our college cup matches this evening. Each team is made up of campers who pick a college or university to represent. Every team is hand selected by a coach and the players have the opportunity to play singles and doubles while scoring points for their teams. These singles will matches will count towards UTR ratings and all matches played are tallied together to decide on a college cup champion for the evening.
In the morning we will begin our singles play tournament matches at 8am!

More to come
Tuesday - Wooster
Today the campers worked on their singles strategies in the morning session. In the afternoon, the campers learned a new doubles warm up drill and several volley drills that they were able to put into practice. Our evening activity was casino night and the campers were eligible to win an array of Wilson gear!
We have posted some of the action from the Sunday Night College Cup matches on our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/wilsontenniscamps. While you are there “Like” our page so you are sure to know when we post the next set of photos from camp.
Wooster - Match Play II Kickoff
Yesterday, we welcomed the campers to their first day! After a brief orientation, the players worked on forehands; emphasizing that they should be playing at least 70 percent of the court as a forehand.
After dinner the campers were placed into teams for their college cup matches. This week the campers are divided up and given a counselor as their coach. Each team picks a college or university to represent and play matches to win points for their teams. Every team played an eight game pro set this evening, as well as some bonus games. Some campers played singles and some doubles.
Our night concluded with some downtime to relax and get to know one another better!
Last day at Wooster!
It is the last day here at the Wilson tennis camp. This morning the campers reviewed all the basic shots: forehands, backhands, serves and volleys. After watching their videos of all their strokes, the kids were able to put what they learned into action. The campers ended the morning with college drills and the final rounds of the Olympic tournament. With a three way tie for first place the competition was on and a final game was played to determine the winners.
After the morning session, the kids were excited to start the famous Wilson raffle. Our campers have the chance to win string, t-shirts, grips, a brand new Wilson backpack and a customized Wilson racquet! This raffle is almost more fierce and competitive than some of the games the campers play! After the raffle, the kids got back out on the court for the final mini lessons, game court, and chance to beat the pro. With a small rain scare the campers had to wait for some time before playing all camp around the world! The excitement for around the world spread to the parents and staff members with all the cheering. Camp this week was a success with lots of tennis and lots of fun! Thanks to all the staff and campers for making the week a good one.
Clash Carnival Wednesday - Wooster
It is one of the last days of camp and the campers have an exciting day ahead of them! This morning campers continued to learn and practice their forehand and backhand strokes. Understanding the fundamentals is key to improving these young players’ games.
This afternoon was focused on volleys. After practicing for a little bit, the kids got to compete in a doubles game shootout. The winners of the shootout received an extra raffle ticket for the famous Wilson raffle that takes place Thursday. Along with the doubles shootout, the campers got to take part in the all new Wilson Clash Carnival. The campers were able to compete for the hardest hit serve with the state of the art technology we have here at Wooster. Campers also could try and hit prizes that were laid out around a court. It is more difficult than one might think. Yet some very lucky campers got to take home some sweet prizes like a new Wilson racquet bag, t-shirts and towels, and even a new Wilson racquet! Another highlight of the afternoon session was a very special visit from Dave’s dogs.
This evening the campers got to continue with mini lessons, a game court, and a chance to beat the pro. Campers are getting the chance to use what they learn during the day in a competitive but fun environment. After tennis the campers get to show off their talents in our very own Wilson Talent show. The campers have been working hard all week on their skits and finally get to show the whole camp what they can do off the court!
ARE WE HAVING FUN YET?
