WORDS AND CONNECTIONS
Hey!
i forgot to tell you the name of the subjects from my Master Degree Morphosyntax and Linguistic Thinking Evolution.
FIRTS TASK: Latin Locutions
The first one I remember is Ipso Facto so I asked Mr. Google and this is what I’ve found. And I wasn’t that wrong, I thought the meaning was immediately or at the moment and the real translation is “inevitable”... Did you know?
The second one I wanted to mention, oh and just for the record they are going to be a total of ten, is Panem et circenses and I was so surprised since there’s a restaurant named Panem and when I read about what does it mean of course it was related with bread to be more specifically “bread and circuses” referring to basic needs food and entertainment and also point that a person needs it to be happy.
Third one Carpe Noctem, this is the nocturnal version of Carpe Diem (yes, this is the fourth) both according to my research refers to working hard at night or early hours in the morning when is still dark in order to finish something or enjoy yourself after a hard work’s day is done. Carpe Diem according to the Merriam Webster Dictionary had a free translation "Enjoy yourself while you have the chance" and it is taken as a philosophy of life. Cool huh?
And if this would be a story this would be the twist, I grew up in a catholic family with a matriarch at charge since she was widowed at an early age, I’m talking about my grandma (the mother of my mom). At that time if she request that all the kids sit and pray for Virgin Mary of course as a child you obey. And the words come to me, a close friend of my grandma made us to repeat this one in particular Ora pro nobis, the translation of this locution is “pray for us”.
Number six of my list and I remember been using this one too, Non grata referring to something that you don’t like or someone is not welcome.
Modus operandi means the way something is done referring to a robbery. Even tho emerges a doubt about this one if it can be applied to any situation… What’s your opinion?
Like I’m a rebel (lol) this one causes me excitement, Vox populi it means the voice of the people. Hope you can find the reason of the excitement and join the cause. (I said we would have fun, right?)
This one is very common one in the professional life Curriculum Vitae in Mexico we abbreviate it “CV” it is a document that contains a brief or extended, according to the situation, summary about the professional and personal life used to find a job basically. The exact meaning that Mr Google said is “course of life” it sounds kind of poetic.
Last one, and most common, ad hoc according to Merriam Webster Dictionary means something concerned with a particular end or purpose.
This is all for adhoc, I hope you had enjoyed it as much as I did. May the Force be with you!
