Headcanons: Memento & Mori
General
For countless millennia, Memento and Mori were among the many gods who oversee the cycle of life and death (though Memento was more in charge of the memories of life)
Their true forms are eldritch-like...enough to drive a human mad. If they must interact with humanity, they take on more mild forms.
Stories claim they’re faceless, have striped tendrils and 4-6 wings with hypnotic eyes, and carried large hourglasses on their backs or in their hands like lanterns.
But in 2019 they both got kinda bored of doing the same things...and humanity intrigued them with their new “customs”.
At some point they learned about the Internet, then the YouTube community, and finally Mark and Ethan’s work--and appeared to them.
They wished to experience life as humans for one year, and because of the YouTubers’ influences on the population they asked if they could use their image in order to partake in “Internet traditions”.
Mark and Ethan were understandably shocked but they agreed...on the condition that they made their own separate channel.
And thus, Unus Annus began.
⌛ Memento ⌛
Full name is Memento Unus.
He’s a few decades older than Mori, so in a way he’s like his mentor when it comes to safeguarding souls.
Despite this, he’s much more hesitant about the “Internet customs” he and Mori agreed to try for a year--not wanting to hurt his friend.
His sole duty is the preservation and alteration of memories.
And because of that, he’s got such an excellent memory himself. He’s got plenty of stories to share if you’re willing to lend an ear.
Memento can also tap into the subconscious of anyone he makes physical contact with and see all of their memories.
If there’s any gaps--say in someone with amnesia--he can insert new memories or dig around for the missing pieces.
Or if there’s..less than pleasant memories someone wishes to forget, he can change them into happier ones.
But he does make sure the person forget he gave them memories, so they don’t go telling others.
He visits the Crankegos from time to time, though when he peered into Blank’s memories--he was so shaken up he couldn’t speak for the rest of the day.
So...he just tries not to let his curiosity get out of hand. Though it’s his biggest weakness.
💀 Mori 💀
Full name is Mori Annus
Very soft-spoken, and optimistically nihilistic.
He’s just like “everything ends eventually, so let’s make the most of it!”
That’s why he’s so willing to agree to try insane things like neti pots, sensory deprivation chambers, and playdough consumption.
He’s more like a curious child if anything.
One of his major duties as a god is safeguarding souls--and tending to fragile ones--before passing them onto the afterlife.
The earlier the soul leaves a person’s body, the weaker it is.
The most fragile are from deaths that occurred instantaneously, without giving the soul itself any time to prepare for departure.
None actually shatter, but still....Mori is extremely careful and nurturing to each and every one--regardless of the individual it once shaped.
He’s just an extremely empathetic entity.
He’s fond of classic, instrumental music. It bring him some serenity.
Lurks around the other Ipliers on occasion, but he usually keeps his distance and focuses on the UA channel alongside Memento.
whatever you do don’t listen to “as the world caves in” by matt maltese and think of unus and annus on their final day of the channel before they die!!
Memento Mori. Unus Annus.
Okay I wanna talk more about my Unus Annus AU where Mark/Mori is a death god and Amy if a life goddess and they’re in love.
Okay so I used Google Translate and it says that “Vita” is Latin for “Life” so Life Goddess Amy will be henceforth known as Vita.
Mori first met Vita thousands of years ago. Vita was helping a dying animal find the strength to keep living, because she knew that if it recovered it would have many years longer to live. Mori showed up to claim it’s soul upon it’s death. Vita refused to let him claim the animal, though, and continued to comfort and reassure it. Mori was intrigued by her determination and refusal to back down from him, a Death god, a bringer of the one inevitability that is certain to befall all living creatures.
He met her a few more times over the next couple of centuries, and his intrigue became admiration, which grew into fondness, and eventually became feelings of romance.
Vita had been wary of this Death god for many years, until one day (sometimes between his states of admiration and fondness), he just... backed down. Didn’t try to tell her that Death is inevitable. Didn’t try to argue that she’s only delaying what had to come eventually. Didn’t put up any fight at all, really. He just told her that perhaps, since life is so fleeting anyway, it didn’t matter if he claimed this soul sooner rather than later. Perhaps they deserved a bit more time.
After that, their encounters were less a struggle between life and death, and more just a meeting of the two.
There were a few times when even with all her effort Vita couldn’t give someone/something more time, and when Mori came to claim the souls, he was more gentle than before. Less “This was inevitable, I hope you made the most of your time, you’re never getting it back,” and more “It’s alright. Your time may be up but your memory still lives, I’m sure it will go on to inspire others and their use of their time.”
At one point they began to set up meeting simply to see each other. They took on more human forms and walked about the world together, pretending that weren’t opposing forces of nature. It became a regular part of their lives.
It let them learn more about humans too, which was very helpful to Mori. He learned more about how humans view death and why they fear and struggle against it so much (or why some don’t fear it quite enough).
They liked to visit little restaurants and parks together. Mori was rather shocked when, after a tree in their favorite park was knocked over in a storm, he felt sorrow about it. He didn’t want it’s time to be up.
He helped Vita plant a new tree in it’s place. It was nice.
It’s a struggle to keep the relationship a secret from Mori’s partner in death, Memento. Memento dealt with the memories of those past, not the passing itself, but he would sometimes pop in unannounced when Mori was out collecting souls.
Mori thinks that Memento doesn’t know about him and Vita, but Memento actually caught them on one of their outings centuries ago. He’s fine with it, hopes it works out for them. Mori was a lot grumpier before he met Vita.
Anyway I made up all this off the top of my head and I’ve run out of other ideas. Hope y’all like it!
I found me a white pen and some black papers ⚪⚫

What was Time to a god? What was Death? When you’d lived so long, been through so much of humanities’ worst moments, perhaps you simply stopped fearing the end. They spoke so much of accepting the end, yet when it came to it… He was afraid, wasn’t he?
Or maybe it was less that he was afraid of the end, but of what happened after. Not for him. Whatever faced him in the endless abyss, he could take. But what of his partner, who had never lived without him? What of humanity? What would happen after he was gone? Would he be replaced? Or would Time itself simply cease to be? Cease to be controlled, until all the world was full of plotholes and messed up lines?
Would Mori mourn him? Or would the god of Death simply understand that it was his time and move on with his grief? He’d hate to think of him crying like he did when he was first created, a simple child in the new world needing to come to terms with loss.
He supposed it didn’t matter much in the end, however. Everyone died. It’s what they represented. It’s why they were named as they were. Memento Mori. Remember death. Even the gods could be killed, their golden ichor spilled on marble floors. This was simply part of life. He could do nothing but accept it.
But there was one regret.
He had never considered, after Mori came to be, that he would die alone.
But he was the only one he could blame for this.
One Year
Characters: Mark, Ethan, Amy, Memento, Mori, UA
Summary: The origins of Unus Annus
Word Count: 2001
Notes: I really like the idea of Memento and Mori as egos, so this is basically an origin story of how they created the channel. I also wanted to stay relatively consistent with the lore on SCP-11325, so this is an origin story for her as well. This story includes my personal head canons about their powers and personalities.

There are many layers of reality. There is the layer of life, where all people and creatures are born. There is the upside-down, a dark and twisted place that exists parallel to life. And there is a layer for all the common souls’ final resting place. Nothing lives in this layer of reality save three entities whose sole purpose is to keep the world running smoothly. Death is inevitable, after all, so there has to be someone around to stop any chaos.
It’s hard to say if these beings actually do stop chaos, or if they’re just fixing their own mistakes.
“I’m boreeeeed,” one of them whined. He dressed in all black, slumped over the spiraling space around him.
The entity beside him appeared to roll his eyes, though it’s hard to say for sure since his eyes were pure white, almost glowing. “Don’t you have work to do, Memento? These souls need to be processed.”
