Bean, would you consider yourself more conservative/libertarian? I'm having this conundrum of what to do. I think ICE has gone too far, way too far, and it's legitimately scaring me. But, a lot of right circles are vehemently defending them and a lot of leftists are militantly opposed to them. Neither group is looking at this with a single shred of nuance. I am pro-immigration reform, I want the illegal immigration problem dealt with, but not like this. Not if it lets them be trigger happy. Not if it paves the way for rights to be ignored and violated. Regardless of what Pretti did to "disrupt" their operation throughout the day, what he was doing in that moment did not warrant death. I'm just at a loss and it feels like everyone has gone insane. I'm too scared to discuss it with anyone from either side as I just can't take the animosity that flares up no matter who I talk to.
Technically I would fall under the umbrella of "Classic Liberal" which is one of the reasons I get testy over people that use liberal and leftist interchangeably, and even more so with leftists that claim to be liberals.
As for ice, everyone needs to go back to their corners and take a breather because everything has escalated to the point of it being unacceptable on both sides.
The right to protest does not include the right to impede people carrying out their lawful duties, nor does it include the right to block traffic or break into a church and interrupt their services.
That's called civil disobedience and people used to understand that doing that can land them in jail or get them some fined for their actions, and the people protesting understood and accepted those possibilities.
Anyone that wants to fight me on that, please click this link and after reading what the aclu has to say about it.
I have a feeling that paid protestors are feeding in to this problem too, they don't have a dog in the fight they're just there to get their $200 or whatever dollars for the day, they're not going to have 'get arrested' as part of the contract. Couple of the larger companies that do that kind of contracting are turning down any inquiries from folks that want to hire for these protests for that and other reasons. Rent a crowd is a weird concept when it comes to a protest
None of that makes ice's reaction the proper one, understandable to a point, but not right saw a video with folks stopping a couple ice agents the guys were telling them flat out that the person they were picking up was a convicted child rapist or something along those lines and the ladies just didn't seem to care.
Which that gives the right the same ammunition as the left has when someone innocent gets picked up.
I'm seeing way to many conflicting stories about this recent gentleman who was killed to know what is and isn't true, or even what is manipulated information so I can't speak to any of that.
the anti ICE rhetoric is contributing to all of that too, you're making the guys out doing the job really jumpy and nervous all the time they're going to be more prone to reacting with deadly force.
What would you do if you knew people were doxing you in order to threaten you and your families safety and you continually hear from folks that they'll be hunting you down.
This is a one hand dirties the other instead of a one hand washes the other situation, and it's just snowballed to where it's currently at.
But both sides really need to calm down and deescalate, because it's over the line and has been, everyone needs a nap.
I'm gonna get yelled at from both sides for this I bet, but that's fine, I'm used to it.
You're entitled to your opinions on all of this as well, if you're concerned about reactions you are also entitled to keep those opinions to yourself,
