Across the Wide and Lonesome Prairie, by Kristiana Gregory. This was the first Dear America diary I read back when I was 9 and I have kept my copy ever since. I still consider it my favorite book.

Now that I know more about the Oregon Trail, I do not consider the subplot involving Narcissa Whitman to be likely, though it does add to the story.
