This summer I had the privilege to travel to Morocco with a group of people I had not met before the trip. Going into it I thought it I thought it would be scary, But after a few days together I knew I would remember it forever. During the program we visited the most well known cities and places in Morocco including: Marrakech, Res, Rabat, and the Sahara Desert. Through the long bus drives and sleepless nights I was amazed how I was able to connect with people on such a deep level so quickly.
At the beginning of the trip our group formed a constitution, although it didn't seem like it would really do anything, it meant that we acknowledged that we were not in this experience alone and we had the leadership to make our own choices. No doubt about it this helped me grow as a person. The group dynamic forced me to express my feelings and my thoughts more and it helped me be more open with the people around me. A skill that was hard for me to develop on my own.
On this trip we had many conflict that we had to solve on or own, speak up for what we think is right while maintaining a level of respect. I was confronted with situations that I felt uncomfortable in, like bargaining. What some perceive as a game, and what I was expected to be good at because of my culture was difficult for me because I am not a fan of confrontation, and there I am arguing with a person in the market for a price. As much as I didn't like doing it it is part of the moroccan culture and I wanted to immerse myself as much as possible.
Through all the tough times in this trip I cannot deny how amazing the experience was and how grateful I am for the relationships I cultivated with my group members and homestay family. I will carry these experiences with me forever and will continue to grow knowing what I know.
