“Waves of Seaway Will Lap Over Most of Morrisburg,” Toronto Star. March 20, 1941. Page 03. ----- Old Folk Will Mourn River Bank, But Town Co-Operative ---- CALL LEGISLATURE ---- Special to The Star Morrisburg, March 20. - Morrisburg residents expect about two-thirds of their community will be flooded by the St. Lawrence power and seaway development, Reeve Fred Broder said today.
More than two-third of the 1,400 residents will lose either their homes or places of business. The Reeve said he thought the flooded sections would be rebuilt northwest of the present site.
‘The people have been hearing seaway talk for so long they were sort of hardened to it,’ he commented. ‘But they never thought it would really come to pass. The older ones do not want to move. They love the St. Lawrence and hate the thought of leaving it. But if it is in the interests of progress and defence we will try to make the best of it. Those had not been much kick from Morrisburg residents.’
Back to Congress Washington, March 20 - (UP) - The plan for development of the St. Lawrence seaway - rejected by the Senate seven years ago - was on the way back to Congress today as a defensive measure. Details were withheld until tomorrow when Mr. Roosevelt will submit it to Congress. ‘Mighty Partnership’ Ogdensburg, N. Y., March 20 - (UP) - Signature of the seaway treaty by the U.S. and Canada has cemented ‘a mighty partnership’ in a common national defence effort in the opinion of George S. Reel, trustee of the New York state power authority.
He said the development ‘will open the world’s greatest agricultural and industrial area to oceangoing vessels from Duluth, Minn., to the Atlantic.’ Special Ontario Session A special session of the Ontario legislature will be held in early May or June to discuss the St. Lawrence waterways, it was learned today.
A tremendous problem in construction faces Hydro when the new 1,100,000 horsepower to be developed near Cornwall as part of the scheme becomes available.
At present Hydro generates 1,525,000 horsepower and buys 400,000 horsepower. This is carried over the present network of transmission lines from Ontario and Quebec plants to the remotest hamlets in the province.
New Transmission System ‘You can’t dump another 1,1000,000 horsepower over the same lines,’ one official said today. ‘It will necessitate construction of not only main transmission lines but also many huge transformer stations to step down the voltage. Voltage is just like water pressure. You have to start the power off with tremendous pressure, otherwise it leaks, just as water leaks.’
‘Then you have to have transformer stations at the destination or distribution point to drop the power down to safe voltage for use of households.
‘There will thus have to be complete new main transmission lines and stations and even more subsidiary or lower voltage lines to carry it from there.’
Babak Saidi was the 'kindest, sweetest, most loving person,' sister says
An eastern Ontario family is demanding answers after a 43-year-old man died Saturday following a shooting at the Ontario Provincial Police detachment in Morrisburg, Ont.
Babak Saidi, who had schizophrenia, was required to check in weekly at the detachment after his 2014 conviction for assault and battery, his sister Elly Saidi told CBC News Saturday evening.
He had been visiting the detachment without any incident, she said — until this weekend, when his check-in went horribly wrong.

"Wooden Machine"
This is one of the photos from my trip to Upper Canada Village that didn't make the cut, but I thought the digitally mirrored version was interesting. This is a shot from under the sawmill where water drives a power wheel that runs the saw above. I cropped and mirrored it.

A friend and I took a trip to Upper Canada Village. It was my first time there, and it was better than I expected. It's basically a living museum with people living life like it's 1886. You can find more information about each photo here... https://www.flickr.com/photos/matt_molloy/albums/72157686019202183
