mort-riarty now i feel so sad and even guilty because here i...
Sophie, it’s ok. I’m sure that the people in Orlando are proud of you for going to your first pride … it’s infuriating that their night ended so tragically but I’m sure they wouldn’t want you to feel guilty about having a good time. It’s so hard for us LGBTQ+ people in life, it’s good if we can just relax and feel good about ourselves sometimes. Take care, Sophie, if you need anyone to talk to, I’ll be here.
thanks, i don’t want it to look like i’m making it about me bc ofc i’m not!!! i’m deeply empathetic as a person tho and i can’t help but feel shitty about this situation especially since i’m slowly trying to enjoy and celebrate my identity more and more and when smth like this happens it feels like ...waking up from a good short dream to realize everything real around me is a nightmare
I am devastated and enraged by the news. We are living in the 21st century, and we are still not safe from savagery at the hands of other human beings
This was meant to be a month of celebration. This was meant to be a time when we could rejoice in the recent triumphs made towards LGBTQIA+ rights, honour LGBTQIA+ history, and also have a good time. It sickens me that instead we are mourning the victims of a hate crime that was committed during this peaceful and positive time.
Do not try and argue that this is not a hate crime. This is a hate crime with a very specific victim profile. Do not erase the fact that these victims were members and allies of the LGBTQIA+ community, and that they were at a gay bar and not just any nightclub. Do not try and argue that this was just another attack on the American public in general by a Middle Eastern individual, this was a very specific, homophobic attack on queer people.
It makes me sad that, as a nation founded on the idea of protecting the life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness of all its inhabitants, our nation is unable to protect the life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness of its LGBTQIA+ peoples. It sickens me that in a nation that prides itself on being "progressive" and "accepting," mass hate crimes like this still happen. It sickens me that everyday - yes, I mean everyday - I still hear homophobic, sexist, racist, xenophobic, all kinds of prejudiced speech come out of the mouths of my peers, neighbours, even family members. Prejudice is not as dead as America wants us to believe it is.
I am angry that no extra measures are being taken to prevent this prejudice from culminating into a physical harmful act. I am angry that there were no controls in place to prevent the tragedy that occurred in Orlando. I don't understand why there haven't been more restrictions on the purchase and possession of firearms and other weapons. All evidence points towards a decrease in crimes with an increase in bans on guns, yet we're still reluctant to accept this fact and cling onto the hope that "guns will protect us." Guns will not protect us, but reason will. So many people in Orlando have paid the price of unreasonable gun laws and unreasonable hatred. So many others before them also have. How much blood must we shed, how many lives must we pay with before America realises its errors and failures?
As a nation, we can do better than we are currently doing. Although I am angry and disillusioned and sad, I have faith that we can secure a better future someday. In such times of darkness I would like us to remember that there is still hope beyond the horizon.
My sincerest condolences to everyone who is affected by this terrible tragedy, this terrible, unreasonable, senseless act of violence, terror, and hatred against LGBTQIA+ individuals. To my friends who will be attending Pride and other LGBTQIA+ themed events this month, please stay safe. Please.
