Land owner calls for help as his builders encounter wartime munitions

A family in Gio Linh Townlet today feel relieved after 25 mortar rounds have been safely removed from their new house under construction by a mobile Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team managed by Project RENEW and Norwegian People's Aid (RENEW-NPA).

Mr. Tran Vinh Thanh Danh, a resident of Quarter 6 of Gio Linh Townlet, expressed his gratitude to the NPA-Project RENEW team who had arrived at his construction site early on Wednesday morning to deal with the ordnance.

“We are so glad because we now feel safe on our own land,” said the 39-year-old father of three. “Thanks to the team’s quick response, my workers can continue working with peace of mind,” he added.

Syrian troops and Islamist rebels battled close to the armistice line with Israel in the Golan Heights on Monday, as the UN pressed efforts to free 44 peacekeepers held by insurgents. Several mortar rounds fell on the edges of the ceasefire line early Monday as the combatants exchanged rocket, mortar and tank fire near the Quneitra crossing, which Al-Qaeda-linked rebels seized last week, an AFP correspondent reported. The Israeli army on Sunday confirmed firing a mortar round into a Gaza UN shelter where 15 people died on Thursday, but denied killing anyone at the site. Briefing journalists on the findings of an internal military enquiry into the incident at a UN school in Beit Hanun, spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Peter Lerner said militants "in the vicinity" of the school fired mortar rounds and anti-tank rockets at Israeli forces. "We reject the claims that were made by various officials immediately following the incident, that people were killed in the school premises as a result of (Israeli army) operational activity," he added. Gaza Strip militants fired mortar rounds into Israel 12 hours after Saturday's start of a temporary truce Israel agreed to extend for another four hours, the army said. "Rockets have just been fired at Israel despite the humanitarian truce being extended" until 2100 GMT, army spokeswoman Avital Leibovich wrote earlier on Twitter shortly after 1700 GMT, when the original truce had been due to end. Another military spokesman told AFP three mortar rounds had been fired at Israel from Gaza, causing neither casualties nor damage.
