Land owner calls for help as his builders encounter wartime munitions

A family in Gio Linh Townlet today feel relieved after 25 mortar rounds have been safely removed from their new house under construction by a mobile Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team managed by Project RENEW and Norwegian People's Aid (RENEW-NPA).

Mr. Tran Vinh Thanh Danh, a resident of Quarter 6 of Gio Linh Townlet, expressed his gratitude to the NPA-Project RENEW team who had arrived at his construction site early on Wednesday morning to deal with the ordnance.

“We are so glad because we now feel safe on our own land,” said the 39-year-old father of three. “Thanks to the team’s quick response, my workers can continue working with peace of mind,” he added.

The Israeli army on Sunday confirmed firing a mortar round into a Gaza UN shelter where 15 people died on Thursday, but denied killing anyone at the site. Briefing journalists on the findings of an internal military enquiry into the incident at a UN school in Beit Hanun, spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Peter Lerner said militants "in the vicinity" of the school fired mortar rounds and anti-tank rockets at Israeli forces. "We reject the claims that were made by various officials immediately following the incident, that people were killed in the school premises as a result of (Israeli army) operational activity," he added. Today in 1896 the Tootsie Roll was introduced. In the Korean War, Tootsie Roll was a code word for mortar rounds and at the battle of Chosin Reservoir a supply specialist didn't know that and when they were in urgent need of mortar rounds they shipped out thousands of cases of candy.
