Mortimer’s relationship with his mother is actually really interesting to me? Their death lines in particular reveal a fascinating devotion from mom, and if Beatrice dies Mortimer expresses understanding for why she was so scared for him to die, since he personally found the experience unbearable. By another token, Mortimer also reveals he feels more comfortable at the hospital than at home, and he’s thinking of moving out of his mom’s place after his suicide attempt, so it’s clear he’s eager to spread his wings and strike out on his own, so to speak.
So he’s a young moneyed heir prepared to do charity, which would put him in the purview of other charitable types like Edgar, Sean, and Ash -- but interpersonally, he may also be in want of something to make his life more interesting/less depressing? Love and caretaking do not depression cure in real life, but they’re GREAT character motivations; he just seems like the sort of person who would benefit from taking responsibility for someone else, say, Harry.
PHYSICALLY sickly boy Harry Peterson has no money for medicine, and dad is falling on hard times to pay for it; DEPRESSED boy Mortimer Goswick has plenty of money but needs a little light in his life -- why not meet at the Pembroke! why not have Beatrice hold a social-coming-out-to-high-society party for Mortimer! why not invite Harry!! and it feels fitting to me if maybe Mortimer was depressed on account of being closeted, but Beatrice is supportive and just wants her boy to be happy :)
on the darker end of things, if Mortimer has a death wish then I’m sure an ill-intentioned vampire would be happy to deliver for their own benefit...
