What if I went crazy-

I saw so many horrific and terrific Nightmare designs out there and I thought I'd rewrite a part of Dreamtale with concept I've been cooking for a while now :3

The twins being more linked to trees is sooooo cool, you guys on here are geniuses

Please tell us more about roots of evil!! Nightmare and Passive are different beings right? is it a parasitic one or more of he doesn't want to be alone so he is reayd to withstand the horrors? So is Passive on board with hurting Dream?

EEEEEEEE- PREPARE YOURSELF FOR MY YAPPING SESSION!!

In Roots of Evil, Passive and Nightmare are different beings. Nightmare is like an accumulation of Passive's negative emotions which gained life and became some sort of parasite living inside Passive and eventually gaining strength until it had enough to take over most of the physical body, a part of the mind and a whole lot of the energy coursing through it.

Nightmare is not something Passive wanted to create, it's more so like a personification of bad coping mechanisms, an entity that represents the fact of hurting others before they can hurt/ so they can't hurt you anymore, and also maybe a thing of "if their respect won't be earned with love, it will be earned with fear"

Nightmare just an amalgam of Passive's bad thoughts and actions. Bad thoughts towards people which comes from the hatred he felt after being mistreated for his whole life and towards himself because the words eventually got to him and he had moments where he probably thought "If they say that I'm a horrible monster, it's maybe because I am one" (the concept of him thinking that leading to Nightmare having a rather horrific form which is based on the widespread fear of spiders...)

Aaaaand... No, Passive is not on board with hurting Dream at all, but Nightmare drains so much of his energy that he is barely conscious or even not conscious at all most of the time except for a few moments of clarity that he gets randomly (like a spike of energy) or sometimes when Nightmare gets weaker. He used to have many of these moments where he was fully aware- IN FACT, in this AU, it's not Nightmare who turned Dream into stone but it was Passive during a moment of clarity, as an attempt to protect Dream since Nightmare WAS going to get them if Passive didn't do anything-

Now, most of the time, he's too tired to have much control over his own body, it's like he is in a very deep sleep and only rarely wakes up when he feels enough strength to do so (which is how Nightmare got its "smaller form"). Passive understands what Nightmare is doing, there is a part of him that appreciates how much it "cares", but the means it uses to accomplish its "purpose", he is definitely not okay with them.

The bad Sanses are probably Nightmare's lame attempt at getting Passive more friends. Except the creature is very much self centered and made them to be sources of strength (negativity) and servitude, because servitude is how both Nightmare and kinda Passive always understood the concept of friendship (Dream having servitude towards the villagers and the villagers being head over heels for Dream)
