i want to compliment (visual) art but i don't know where to start!! - an intro to appreciating art in a whole new way
there are hundreds of thousands of ways to compliment an artist, but sometimes, it's totally difficult to figure out what to say, maybe you're overwhelmed. maybe you don't have the vocabulary yet. etc.
start looking at your chosen art piece. don't just gaze at it, but THINK about it.
consider one (or more!) of the following:
SUBJECT
who or what is the focus?
SKILL
how is the artist's technical work?
STYLE
what does the artist do to make the piece THEIRS?
SUBJECT
is it a person or character?
what makes you feel drawn to them?
is it how they've been portrayed?
is it their movement or pose?
is it their expression?
is it a place or object?
do you like the realism of it?
or maybe the fictional aspect?
can you see yourself interacting with it?
(omg, hatsune miku! i love how they drew her hair! it makes her look very youthful.)
SKILL
is the artist's work very professional-looking?
do they have a good grasp on anatomy?
movement?
light?
color?
do you feel like your eye is drawn to the right places?
or the detail is just right?
(the mona lisa!! wow, the details on her hands are incredible. the colours also feel very harmonious — nothing really stands out in a jarring way.)
STYLE
what about the personal touch?
do they have a unique brushwork style?
maybe they draw eyes in a way that you just LOVE.
maybe they stylise some proportions in a way that's very appealing to you.
(i’ve NEVER seen anything so beautiful and unique! i love how they utilise big shapes to make the shoes look chunky. and how they use a ink-like brush. i must follow them!)
So now that you have the gist of some things to focus on, it's time to apply them!
“blue and yellow is one of my favourite colour combinations. it gives this painting a really serene feel.”
“i love the brushwork, i think it leads my eye across the piece in a unique way.”
“the composition works really well, i like the tower breaking up the swirls. it is super visually interesting.”
“the stars are depicted in a very unique and beautiful way. i love how they glow!”
“the city being so small brings a sense of isolation. it's a very clever use of scale.”
and if all else fails:
HOOOLY SHIT THIS IS AWESOME
OP I LOVE YOU FOR THIS!!!
