Mahishasura Mardini Mantra ft Uma Mohan - MOST DEAF
1994! - "Sour Thanks, Man"
Today's brief entry will be centered around 1994!'s two song 7" Most Deaf. The pair of songs continues the style we heard in FCKYRHED with perhaps a step back in harshness.
The first track, "Sour Thanks, Man", opens with an almost Shoegaze sounding blob of guitar distortion leading you in. The song then explodes into the intense song structure we've become familiar with. While the drums remain entirely intense, the guitars on this album are a little more about the chords than they are about the turbo plucking found on the band's first album. I think there's a more Math Rock attempt going on in this song. The structure changes format several times throughout the song, with almost intense blast beats at times and a kind of ballad bridge halfway through. The song closes with another one of 1994!'s insanity noise things as electric noises flicker about until the song grows silent.
Track two is "Up Sell the Vibe" and opens with a kind of groovy, chord driven intro. It's got a much more simple sounding instrumentation than previous songs. This formula perpetuates for a while until about a minute and a half in, where the drums begin to flutter about as the guitar follows until a sudden break. More slowed down, borderline Shoegaze song work occurs at this point as muddy chords and a down tempo beat accompany the shouting vocals as the song slowly leads out.
This album is a small departure from 1994!'s first album, and shows a little experimentation. While they can pull off what they're trying to do here, I think that what drew me into this band initially was the turbo plucking, as mentioned earlier sound that they started with. There's one more release from this band that I'll check out on Friday, and we'll see where they decided to go post-this.
Went to see 1994! in London today. 10/10 Would see again.
Caught the drumstick the drummer threw into the crowd. Aw yeah.
1994! are fucking amazing live. Go see them. Now.
They're playing again in Basingstoke apparently in February, Might go see them again, definitely worth it.
1994! - 'Thank All You Guy Helpening'
Aggressive and fun two-piece punky, math-rocky, post-hardcore band from Lancaster, PA. These guys are pretty rad. In a nice twist of irony, the track I've posted is the slowest, most melodic song they've ever done, so be sure to check out their other tracks for more hard-hitting goodness, I linked this one as it was the first track I'd heard from them and it is one of my favourites. This track is off of their first release, 'FCKYRHED', released in 2010. In addition to this they also have another release titled 'Most Deaf', released in 2011.
I need to go to a 1994! show.
