Darksiders Soulmate AU
It was still hard to believe that the incomprehensible lines on your arm actually meant something.
Your entire life you’d been told that you were probably just not born at the right time, that your destined one hadn’t been born yet or that they died hundreds of years ago along with their yet undiscovered civilization. At times, you wished that you were one of the majority that was born without a soul mark instead of the unfortunate few with gibberish inked on your body. If only to not have to deal with the fact that you and others like you were so often used in conspiracy theories about aliens and lizard people.
Well, those nutters were technically right, turns out. The marks did belong to non-human civilizations. Not only that, but how absolutely bonkers is it that your soulmate is an actual angel?!
After the apocalypse, agencies like the one you contacted sprung up to broker more peaceful bonds between Earth and the other realms. All under the guise of “finding your one true love” of course, but the façade was paper-thin to begin with since they were backed by the embassies.
It was slow progress at first, but unorthodox pairings steadily became a more common sight around your rebuilt towns. Human and Maker pairings were the quickest to form, what with the giants helping with every and any construction project on Earth. Only 5% of the resurrected human population had non-human soulmates, but that’s still a huge amount.
Other realms weren’t held in such high regard, however. You were dead for most of the apocalypse and even then, you likely wouldn’t have accepted your agent’s offer to meet your soulmate if it had turned out they were a demon. An undead or some other realm’s denizen? Perhaps. But not one from Hell. The pain was still too fresh.
Heck, even knowing he was an angel was barely and upgrade after you learned that Heaven’s forces were just as indiscriminate towards humans during the war. It took a lot of deliberation for you to finally make up your mind and the decision did not come easy.
So, that’s how you found yourself waiting in a room with an impressively high ceiling. You keep going over the file the agency provided to you in hopes of calming your nerves, but it doesn’t really do much. Still, it’s something for you to focus on. The paper is just his picture, basic profile information including his name in angelic script which perfectly matches the one on your arm, and an image of his own soul mark. There was no mistake, this was the one you were supposedly waiting for all your life.
It seemed both too soon and too long before the large door on the other side of the room opened. You automatically moved to stand, but you froze up in wonder when you finally saw him in the flesh.
“It is a pleasure to meet you y/n, I am Nathaniel.”
