i think quite possibly the only thing i have to add in regards to remmick and the vampirism/colonialism metaphor is that his insistence that sammy be the one to bring his ancestors back to him mirrors the way a lot of white americans become culture vultures in order to fill the void of assimilation

i would say most white americans (with families that came to the country generations ago) have little to no connection with whatever heritage their ancestors had to denounce in order to be percieved as white. and tbh, growing up without a culture (or a culture that no one acknowleges as a culture because it's so globalized) kinda sucks a little. so that's why you see white girls getting box braids calling it "my viking heritage" because they're trying to artificially fill that void with something they're JUST familiar enough with to know but JUST unfamiliar enough to call exotic and interesting. takeaway: american imperialism hurts everyone in the end we've known this blah blah blah

connecting it back to sinners, i think it's pretty clear the point i'm making. remmick wants to use black culture and blues to reconnect with his heritage after assimilating. its not just that he's perpetuating a cycle of colonialism and cultural erasure, it's that he's literally consuming these cultures in order to feel whole in HIS identity again. and i feel like thats a very intentional move with his character. the layers to this movie make me FERAL

i think something a lot of the fandom ignores about harkness is what his idealistic views actually MEAN in context of who he is as a person. yeah we all know he's naïve and, like the rest of them, has no clue what he's getting himself into, but it looks like we're forgetting he's an incredibly propagandized teenager. he joins the walk to write about it. he watches the major with awe. he distracts himself with worrying about marketability as a boy dies. i know he's a cutie pie who wants to make friends but he is also one of those kids who join the army after watching war movies because they can't tell the difference between reality and fiction.

and this is not me saying he's a bad person!!! don't take this as an attack on anyone who likes him because i love him! he's a kid in a totalitarian regime who sees things the way he's been taught to see them!!! but understanding that he's one of the few characters who refuses to combat the system is important i think. "that's literally the point you're stating the obvious" I KNOW. i just worry that not enough people can see past the simplistic characterization of "he just wanted to write". yeah. he set out to write propaganda. up until he snaps his ankle on the hill, he's still writing, which makes me think that he didn't/wouldn't last long enough to confront those ideas and deconstruct them.

maybe his ankle could have been a reality check for him, but he still deludes himself up until his death, talking about how he's going to go home. we never get an epiphany from him about how he's realized everything he knew was bullshit. he was a kid who bought completely into the lie that the military sold him, flawed reasoning and all.
