Mothra: Queen of the Monsters issue 3 first thoughts (mild spoiler warning)
~
Issue 3 starts with a bang and ends with a bang! After their harrowing experience in the previous installment, Emi and Mira must find a way to train Mothra Gemini, and fast!
------------------------------------------------------------------
I certainly love how Emi and Mira begin to patch up their differences here. They understand that performing the Haora Mothra ritual requires them to be perfectly in sync with each other, which wasn't possible after years of being separated.
There are also a handful of unexpected Kaiju appearances as well. The ones that took me completely off guard were the first official appearances of MechaMothra and Desghidorah!
And this issue clearly shows Mothra's rivalry with the Ghidorah species, who seem to have taken over the planet in the far future.
We also see the Handmaidens of Antra return after their brief appearance in the first issue. (I honestly didn't expect them to have a positive relationship with the Shobijin.) The bleak future illustrates how devastating the effects would be if the twins were to lose sync with each other.
Also, Mira's idea to write a new song to speed up Mothra Gemini's metamorphosis was clever indeed! Mothra Gemini's imago form looks spectacular. Majestic and regal, just how the Queen of the Monsters should be.
Matt Frank's stellar artwork, paired with Sophie Campbell's brilliant writing, gives life to this issue. I have high hopes for Issue 4, once it comes out!
Mothra: Queen of the Monsters issue 3 was just as incredible as the previous issue. Although it experienced some pacing issues, similar to earlier installments, it still offers a beautifully poignant story about the consequences of a world without harmony.
4/5 stars~
