Making The Old New Again
The image I'm sharing with you in this article is one of many I have taken while on assignment for my local city parks and recreation department. Age had caught up to a much beloved wooden play structure in one of our popular parks. It was time to replace it for safety reasons however the decision to do so was a controversial one with citizens in our community.
Many locals had grown up playing in this castle like playground with it's well worn towers, swing sets and sand boxes. Folks who remember volunteering to build it recall how the community had rallied together to build it over the space of a week and what joy it brought to their children and grandchildren. There was an overwhelming sense of pride among the individuals who had worked hard to create this monument. It was hard to let go for many even though there would be another volunteer build for the replacement playground.
My mission was to document the new volunteer build, but I was determined to photograph the old structure for historical purposes as well as sentimental ones. This I did along with many hours spent recording the building of the new structure and all the volunteers who toiled tirelessly to raise a new castle that will be the catalyst for new memories for generations to come.
One of the early mornings when I was out photographing the old structure, just hours away from it being demolished, I let my mind wander to what the sight of this must have looked like to a young imaginative mind at the age of four or five as it stood among the dark greens and browns of the trees in the park. I decided that once I had the opportunity I'd take an image and try to create visually what a young imaginative mind, filled with knights and dragons might have seen through their creative eyes. Th image you see here is what the magic and alchemy of modern digital technology and a few hours spent in front of a computer resulted in. I'll leave it to you to tell me if I succeeded or not.
There is a moral to this recounting if you should be interested in reading it. Often we do well to travel backward in time to our memories and experiences and contemplate how all those things we grew up with affect and define our decisions as adults. Each time we do we relive a part of our past and bring back bits and pieces we discover there to build the structure we use to relate to and understand the world around us.
No two experiences growing up are alike. We are each unique in this way. To realize and accept these personal experiences and the fact that our childhood differences inform our likes, dislikes, preferences, understanding, hopes and dreams throughout our adult life is to begin to realize how important tolerance is to our tribe, community and society as a whole. We must accept the fact that our old is as new as we are willing to make it. The castle of our childhood looms in the forest of our thoughts for a lifetime.
