All Our Yesterdays: Day 173
12.01.20. Mail Online:
“Air pollution is set to cause 160,000 deaths in Britain over the next decade…"
Air pollution is a major environmental hazard and a “major public health emergency” according to the British Heart Foundation. It will cause 40 people a day to die from fatal strokes and heart attack. It also contributes significantly to miscarriage, dementia and lower intellectual development in children.
As long ago as 2014 the EU was threatening fines of up to £300m a year for failure to meet EU air quality directives. By the end of 2018 the Tory Government had lost its third court case defending its inaction over air pollution.
Pampering to the power of the motoring lobby, Tory governments have failed to act, despite knowing that dirty air kills many, many people pre annum. The problem has always been that polluted air has never appeared upon the death certificates of all those killed from constantly breathing in dirty air. Up until now, that is.
In December 2020, a coroner ruled that air pollution was a significant factor in the death of Ella Kissi-Debrah, a nine-year-old girl from south London. The coroner ruled the “levels of [air pollution} in excess of WHO guidelines” were a factor in her death.
Previously, Michael Gove at the Ministry For the Environment had promised to put WHO pollution limits into UK law. Needless to say, the “economic viability" of doing so was raised and once again the Tories chose to prioritise saving money over saving lives. But the fight goes on.
09.01.21. The Times:
“Teenage friends of pollution victim start Choked Up campaign for cleaner air”
I wonder if Priti Pate will want to label these environmental campaigners “criminals” and a "threat to democracy" as she did members of Extinction Rebellion? Maybe, just maybe, this government will put the health and well being of the people before profit? But don’t hold your breath (no pun intended). If they repeatedly refused to follow EU directives ordering them to clean up our islands air then it is hardly likely they will start now.
We deserve better.
