It all began with the lowly bicycle. Well into the late 1800s, the sight of a woman astride anything was horrifying to polite society. Still, the idea of freedom on two wheels proved irresistible to the gentler sex. In the opinion of Susan B. Anthony, riding bicycle “did more to emancipate women than anything in the world.”
The motorcycle was invented in Germany around 1885 but it wasn’t until 1901 that the first of these intriguing vehicles was sold in the USA. The Hendee Company, formed by Carl Oscar Hedstrom and George Hendee, manufactured the first US motorcycle, the Indian. Hendee later changed its name to the Indian Motorcycle Company.
