‘ HEY, DOROTHY. y’wanna chill it out with the damn thumpin’ already? yer shakin’ my table. c’mon. i got--i got stuff goin’ on.
in this particular context, stuff refers to the half-eaten plate of tabasco-smothered fries arranged ever so carefully adjacent to a comic book. && it’s a great story, really, the two open pages displaying a cute pink-haired girl who then turns herself into a dragon in one panel so that she can bite her mentor’s hand. she’s a shapeshifter, obviously, and he thinks that’s the shit.
( the comic was also free. )
( because he stole it. )
she’s holding a walmart bag filled with votive candles wrapped in saints. the glass clinks together when she swings the bag as she walks up and down aisles, searching, searching, searching. sometimes she stops and touches a person’s elbow, says a thing gently when they bend their head to hear her, then moves on. sometimes she thinks about stopping but stares a little hard at the person in question and turns a corner quick to avoid small talk.
she finds him on an aisle full of batteries and replacement cords for phone chargers.
“there’s a funeral out back, near the loading dock. would you care to come?” she asks.

for someone who is rarely ever in his right mind, miles has a surprising amount of patience. this kid, though, is pushing it. not to mention his Voices are like static, which is irritating in and of itself. closing time is soon, and he desperately wants to get home and on his couch with a warm cup of tea, like, twenty minutes ago.
“ Are you here to buy something? ”
his words totally aren’t clipped and laced with irritation. totally.
