"It's A Shame" was written as a collaborative effort between Stevie Wonder, Lee Garrett and Syreeta Wright, whom Wonder would marry a few months after the song's release. It was released as the Spinners' second single of the year on Motown's V.I.P. subsidiary (V.I.P. 25057) on June 11, 1970. 'Shame' was produced by Stevie, marking his first production of another artist. It was the group's biggest hit at Motown, peaking at 3 on the Billboard R&B Chart and 14 on the Hot 100. It also marked the group's return to the Top 40, a feat not achieved since "I'll Always Love You" in 1965. The song was also a big deal for Stevie Wonder, who was barely 20 years old at the time. It, along with the mammoth "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours", released June 3, meant he had written 2 big hits in just 8 days.
