Mount Beacon, New York

There are 3 main reasons to go from New York to Beacon:

- Dia Beacon - super wonderful museum exhibiting contemporary art in a converted former box printing plant

- Mount Beacon - moderate hiking trail with great views onto the town, Hudson river and surrounding mountains

- Proximity - 1,5 hours on the train or car from Grand Central Station

We drove to Beacon and hiked the trail starting in town (near Bob's corner shop) along the remaining parts of the Mount Beacon Incline Railway. We did stop to rest and look at the views at a place where the casino used to stand and then continued to the summit and the fire lookout tower, which was quite windy on top but offered amazing views!

We ate a lot of ice cream and then decided climbing up a mountain would be a good idea. (It was.) (But we almost quit like 6 times.)

A Guide to Impressing Your NYC Visitors: Beacon, New York

In our opinion, it’s *pretty* difficult to get tired of NYC and its diverse array of boroughs. But if the bump-and-grind of the city is getting you and your guests down, a day trip into nature may be a perfect getaway option! Get this: a mere 80-minute ride on the Metro-North from Grand Central Terminal will situate you in quaint and picturesque Beacon.

Start the day off by admiring the Hudson River — this time, without the cacophony of the West Side Highway! — from the Scenic Hudson’s Long Dock Park, right alongside the Metro-North Beacon Station.

If your party is in the mood to contemplate some stunning contemporary art installations, Dia: Beacon is immediately adjacent to the Scenic Hudson’s Long Dock Park. You may have been to Dia Art Foundation’s other outpost in Chelsea, but the cavernous former printing plant that Dia: Beacon sits on is almost as impressive as the paintings and sculptures within it.

After treating your eyes at Dia: Beacon, engage your entire body and breeze through your Fitbit 10,000-step goal on a hike up the highest peak of the Hudson Highlands. This trek up Mount Beacon to the overlook and back may take an hour and a half, but the tremendous view of the Hudson River — and the old casino ruins you’ll come across — will be worth the huffing and puffing.

Traipse back into town after your hike along Main Street, where you can indulge in some good ol’ retail therapy exploring an eclectic collection of shops like Beacon Bath & Bubbles, which stocks handmade soaps and vintage sodas. Finish off your day in Beacon by saying “Allons-y!” to the Doctor Who-eatery, The Pandorica, and get your fill of fish fingers and custard (Fish fingers may be substituted for french toast!). From here, you’re only a 15-minute walk from the Metro-North Beacon Station. Your ride back into the city will surely be littered with compliments from your guests after this day of nature, culture, and adventure!
