Mount Bromo spews volcanic materials into the air as seen from Ngadisari, East Java, Indonesia. Bromo is one of about 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia, an archipelago prone to volcanic eruptions and earthquakes because of its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," a series of fault lines stretching from the Western Hemisphere through Japan and Southeast Asia.

Nikon Repairs Camera of Deceased Mount Ontake Victim, Recovers Photos for Family

On Sept. 27, Mount Ontake erupted without warning in central Japan, killing at least 56 people who were hiking at the popular tourist destination. The catastrophic event was dubbed as Japan’s deadliest volcanic eruption since 1902. A terrifying video taken by one of the hikers shows massive plumes of volcanic ash racing down the mountain side, enshrouding people who are running for their lives.

Incredible Footage of Japan’s Mount Ontake Erupting

The recent eruption of Mount Ontake, at the border of Nagano and Gifu prefectures, was indeed unfortunate, having left 56 people dead and many others injured. It’s quite interesting to note, though, that a few of those casualties included people taking pictures and videos of the eruption.

There were also other hikers who died there, but not after having taken some amazing pictures of the eruption
