The Prince who turned into a swan ~The last days of the hero, Yamato Takeru
After his wife, Princess Ototachibanahime, entered the water, Yamato Takeru gradually faded into obscurity. [The story so far]
Later, in Shinano (now Nagano Prefecture), after killing a white deer, the god of the mountains, with wild garlics, a white dog led Yamato Takeru out into Mino. Here he joined his escort and entered Owari (now Aichi Prefecture).
When Yamato Takeru went to confront the god of Mt. Ibuki (on the border of Gifu and Shiga prefectures), a large white boar the size of an ox appeared in front of him (some say it was a giant snake). Yamato Takeru fell ill as a result of this god's haunting.
He set out for Yamato in a feeble state, and when he reached Tsue Tsuki-zaka(The slope with a walking stick) on the way, he said, "My legs are bent mie (meaning three times over). I was very tired.” So this place is called Mie. From Onotsu he went to Nobono (now Kameyama City, Mie Prefecture), where he died while thinking of his homeland, Yamato. He was said to have been 30 years old at the time.
On hearing the news, his father, the emperor, unable to eat or sleep, ordered a hundred officials to bury him in the Nobono mausoleum, but Yamato Takeru had turned into a swan and flew away, pointing to Yamato. In the coffin, only his robe was left empty, and there was no corpse.
A tragic prince who failed to become emperor, this returned to increase the popularity of Yamato Takeru, who is still often seen as a hero on many stages and in animations today.
This is the final installment of “Japanese Myths and Gods", part one of the series, "Major Myths in the Chronicles" which we have been presenting for some time. As befits a final episode, we close with the appearance of Yamato Takeru. Thank you very much for reading. In the next part of this series, we will introduce you to ‘The world of devine spirits, the gods in our lives’.

Oh Mary, dear Queen of Heaven, oh You Lady ever White, princess of the Springs, of living waters and laughter. Hear my cry. Hear my distress. Faces, figures, I am lost. Too much, it's too much, all the time, everywhere, I am lost.
Oh Beautiful Lady, She who surpasses them all, you who gather spring in your hands, she who draws the divine water and infuses it with Your Presence, may your wild and benevolent Joy guide my steps in these troubled times.
