ALL NEW Dancers of the Cloth Scholarship for Orisha, Spiritual Baptist and Rada Communities
The Dancers of the Cloth Scholarship, sponsored by The Cloth (Founder and Creative Director, Robert Young) is dedicated to sourcing, supporting and enabling dance talent in the Orisha, Spiritual Baptist and Rada communities of Trinidad and Tobago to access formal training. Two (2) Full Scholarships for New Waves! 2018 will be awarded, including transport costs.
The Cloth and New Waves! share the intention of decolonizing scholarship, performance, and representation through empowering people of the Caribbean to become cultural ambassadors of their own communities and practices, and counter-narrate representation by outsider voices and research. Our organizations will scout talent and seek recommendations from the communities. Endorsement for each candidate will be sought from their community and religious leaders. We believe this important to foster community by-in and intergenerational collaboration and self- empowerment. We want to encourage the younger generation to recognize and respect the value the life’s work of their elders and ancestors in the preservation of knowledge and practices.
