Guru, RIP
It was incredibly meaningful for me that these students gave me their attention, listened to what I had to say, and then related their own experiences to mine. It meant so much that they considered a perspective that directly opposes what they were previously taught. They asked inquisitive questions because they wanted to understand more. They asked questions I’ve never been asked, because I’ve never engaged with someone of their experience. I learned that to hear someone acknowledge their own “brainwashing” provides me not with a sense of triumph, but rather one of heartbreak. So much of this project has been about tapping into a fighting, riotous mentality. The subject matter always puts me into a defensive-ready mode. So I’m extra grateful and humbled to instead be confronted with their sensitivity and open-mindedness. 📸 : Eva Wang
