The mask wasn’t something that Bobbie put on often in this city --- not when there was Steve Rogers around... she had figured that it was best that she keep her identity in the shadows, keep people from seeing her. But the direction that things had been going in, Bobbie knew better than to let herself stand on the sidelines. This was a time of action. And Bobbie was a woman of action, and it seemed, her newfound friend was also a woman of action. (She was young, Bobbie had noticed that much, but she was brilliant and reminded Bobbie of Sonny. Not just because of the suit, but the drive that she had.) 

They had met --- not as enforcers --- but as two registered people listening in on calls that enforcers put out --- their pleas for help. All it had taken was one chance call for them to meet, and they hit it off. But somewhere along the line, Bobbie had showed Riri the technology that formed the wings on her back --- reminiscent of the Falcon’s --- and Bobbie ended up handing over some of her tech and sitting in a lab with Riri. Admittedly, Bobbie didn’t know much about what Riri was doing, but she trusted the other woman. (More than she should, she was sure. Miggy probably would have freaked out if he knew that she was sharing her tech.) 

Riri’s hand hovered over the activator for Bobbie’s shield and it immediately threw up an error --- slightly aggressive in nature and threatening to send out a beacon if touched again. (A locator, for Alchemax to find the shield in case the technology was stolen.) Bobbie reached over and placed her hand over the same spot and it recognized her. “It’s a warning,” Bobbie was sure that Riri had already pieced that much together. “I’m not sure if it’s DNA or my fingerprints,” Bobbie said. She was sure that Miggy would have known --- if they even allowed him that kind of information. The shield that appeared in front of them was red and looked transparent --- holographic but solid at the same time. “What do you think? Think you can work with this kind of tech?”

She  was  always  one  for  minding  her  own  business.  Even  back  on  Asgard,  it  was  rare  that  she  butted  into  someone  else’s  business,  for  as  someone  who  liked  to  keep  up  mischief,  it  was  always  better  to  be  the  silent  observer.  One  learned  a  lot  more  and  rather  quickly  just  by  watching  from  afar.

These  late  night  strolls  usually  consisted  of  Helen  simply  enjoying  the  night  air.  If  she  came  across  something  unusual,  she’d  file  it  away  for  later  use.  As  someone  who  wasn’t  on  either  side  of  these  super  power  wars,  she  had  no  fierce  loyalties  one  way  or  the  other  so  she  wasn’t  one  for  quickly  helping  others  when  she  came  across  shenanigans.  Mutants  being  rounded  up  and  carted  off  to  prison?  Not  her  problem.  Enforcers  being  slaughtered  by  rogue  mutants?  Oh,  well.  She  often  carried  on  about  her  strolls  playing  the  part  of  classy  widow  except  on  this  particular  night,  she  came  across  something  harder  to  ignore.

A  girl,  well  young  woman  rather,  was  being  heckled.  From  the  looks  of  it,  they  were  all  mutants  or  mutant  apologists  while  she  was  someone  Helen  didn’t  recognize.  Helen  moved  to  stand  in  the  shadows,  for  they  were  near  the  park  where  cops  had  been  swarming  earlier. Maybe  she  was  sent  to  patrol  or  whatever,   but  the  mutants  who  were  still  out  and  about  weren’t  having  it.

The  suit  she  was  wearing  was  another  reason  Helen  had  stopped  to  observe  the  scene.  It  didn’t  motivate  Helen  to  help  ---  her  suit  ---  but  knowing  she  was  probably  associated  with  team  asshole  was  more  than  enough  reason  to  stick  around.  But  it  became  clearer  with  each  passing  second  that  she  might  not  be  one  of  stark’s  projects.  He  likely  would  have  dusted  them  all  on  sight  but  this  girl  had  allowed  the  mutant  group  to  get  the  best  of  her.

It  seemed  like  one  of  the  mutants  could  manipulate  energy.  Her  suit  was  having  trouble  fleeing  the  scene.  The  thrusters  kept  sputtering  and  the bolt  on  her  chest  seemed  to  be  powering  down.  She  looked  to  be  in  a  panic  while  the  others  were  shouting  horrible  things  to  her.  Helen  frowned,  because  this  wasn’t  some  average  hit  job.  They  were  going  to  torture  her  and  then  leave  her,  which  Helen  supposed  she  couldn’t  blame  them.  From  what  Helen  knew  of  the  Raft,  they  tortured  mutants  out  there  too  and  probably  in  the  worst  of  ways  if  there  was  truth  to  those  collar  rumors.  How  cruel.

And  yet...

She  watched  the  scene  for  a  while  longer,  watching  as  one  of  the  mutants  picked  up  her  helmet  and  blasted  it  to  pieces.  Then  he  aimed  his  fingers  right  at  her  throat.

Fucking  hell.  She  looked  so  young  ---  too  young  to  die  like  this.

Helen  stepped  from  behind  the  bushes,  tesseract  in  hand.  Using  its  energy,  she  sent  a  fiery  dagger  flying  through  the  air.  It  cut  through  all  their  necks  in  the  blink  of  an  eye  with  all  six  of  them  falling  down,  choking  on  their  own  blood.  She  quickly  stepped  over  most  of  their  bodies,  heels  digging  purposely  into  others.  The  energy  module  vanished  as  she  extended  a  hand  towards  the  girl.

“  Unless  you  want  us  to  be  the  next  front  page  story  in  the  Bugle  then  I  suggest  you  come  with  me.  ”

Sharon was sitting on the counter in the lab, watching Riri work. Most days, Sharon would show up at the lab to see Riri and Tony working together, or at least functioning in their own way in the same space. But Tony was off doing something (Sharon had a few ideas as to what he was doing -- or rather, who) and Riri was hyper-focused on something. She was unraveling something, or on the edge of a discovery. (But when wasn’t Riri? That was one thing Sharon had learned quickly about Riri, she was always learning, always absorbing.) 

And then Riri hit her with that line, she was probably thinking out loud -- telling herself to start from the beginning and not actually talking to Sharon, but Sharon groaned all the same. “You sound just like Bucky,” Sharon said, putting a hand on the counter and leaning to the side while looking at Riri, brows raised. “I’m serious. He does that same nihilist shit. Preparing for worst-case scenarios...” Though she understood where Bucky was coming from. And considering his past? It really wasn’t nihilist. Worst-case scenarios were what defined most of his life. But Riri? She was too young to be talking like a hundred-year-old man from the 40s. “Please tell me that the worst thing possible right now is that they forgot the pickles on the cheeseburgers and that it’s not another alien invasion. I just got my hair done...”
