Question 7: Talk about autistic characters in media. What are your favorite canon autistic characters? Are there any characters that you view as autistic, that aren't officially so? What about them makes you think they are autistic? How do you relate to them? What would you like to see in autistic characters in the future?

I actually had to look at a list of canon autistic characters on Wikipedia, but then I remembered the existence of Harland Cooper from The Umbrella Academy. The way he is depicted when he is a nonverbal child is very humanizing and I relate to his hypersensitive hearing and sensory-seeking behavior (He has a tape collection of different sounds, which he listens to at his leisure)

Unfortunately I didn't find any other canon autistic characters that I like. Snork from The Moomins was on the Wikipedia list, but the only tweet confirming his autism has been deleted. So let's move on to my headcanons!

Fluttershy (MLP:FIM)

I headcanon her as autistic because she struggles with social interactions and can communicate better with non-pony animals than with members of her own kind, which was the case for me when I was a kitten and sometimes still is. There is also an episode where she gets overwhelmed from two groups of ponies talking over each other.

Dr. Chandra (2010: The Year We Make Contact)

I know, what a shocker. He can't show his emotions in a way the people around him understand, so much so that his crewmates joke about him not being human. I am a very emotional person, but I often have the wrong facial expression at the wrong time, such as frowning when I'm content or smiling (nervously) when something bad happens.

Throughout the novel and movie, he talks almost exclusively about technology, more specifically his 9000 units, which implies that that is his special interest.

The 9000 units are very dear to him and he sees them as his children. Like him, I also develop very strong attachments to objects, especially my plushies and toys. When I lost two of them, I was genuinely in a state of grief for a couple of days.

SpongeBob (SpongeBob Squarepants)

You heard me. He has a routine that involves going to work at the Krusty Krab every day. When he can't do so e.g. because of holidays, he gets upset.

Although he's supposed to be a young adult in the show, he has interests that are considered childish such as Goofy Goober and jellyfishing. TBH a lot of adult characters from children's cartoons are relatable for that reason. They act more childlike than most neurotypical adults in order to appeal to the target audience.

Lastly, he can't drive. I feel like if I ever went to driving school, it would end up like it always does for him.

What I would like to see in future media is more middle- to high-support needs characters, especially in media aimed at adults. Although autistic characters have become more and more diverse in recent times, most of them still feel savant-coded to me, always having all information about their special interest on hand. It feels kind of alienating for me as someone who finds it difficult to talk about its special interests. Gimmie echolaliac autistic characters, autistic characters who need a tablet to talk, autistic characters with extreme or harmful stims
