Richard Donner’s demonic horror classic THE OMEN & Clive Barker’s HELLRAISER Screening at The Museum of the Moving Image

As part of their Part of See It Big: Summer Movies (’70s & ’80s Edition), Saturday, May 13th, 2023 they will be screening Richard Donner’s demonic horror classic THE OMEN.

Comin Saturday May 20th & Saturday May 27th, as part of their on going series “Disreputable Cinema,” they will be screening Clive Barker’s 1987 directorial debut, the spawned a epic film franchise. Author Preston Fassel is appearing in person for the May 20 screening, followed by a signing of his new book Beasts of 42nd Street.

Also screening Saturday, May 20 as part of their “Queer Cinema, Top to Bottom,” is director Karyn Kusama 2009 film JENNIFER’S BODY, staring Amanda Seyfried, Megan Fox, Adam Brody, J. K. Simmons, and Amy Sedaris. The screening will be will be preceded by an introduction and followed by a book signing with critic Kyle Turner, author of The Queer Film Guide: 100 Films That Tell LGBTQIA+ Stories.

Congratulations to Carl Goodman, recipient of the Winter Film Awards’ 2018 Patron of the Cinema.

At the 2018 Winter Film Awards, which were held on March 3rd, 2018, athe the Copacabana in New York City, time began to become tight. Therefore, I as asked by the show runners to make my presentation brief. Had I the time allotted to give the presentation I’d prepared to honor our Patron Of the Cinema Award recipient, the following is what I had prepared.

The 2018 Winter Film Awards’ Patron of the Cinema Award goes to Carl Goodman, Director of New York City's Museum of the Moving Image.

I know that many of you filmmakers here in attendance are on a tight schedule and have very little time to take in many of the wonderful sites and museums that our city has to offer. But should you have that opportunity to visit such places as the American Museum of Natural History or the Metropolitan Museum of Art you will find that the majority of our museums are these very stagnant institutions, with art or dioramas, that are beautiful to look at, but are not fully engaging.

New York City's Museum of the Moving Image is one of those rare institutions that is a living breathing entity, which is as much a part of the cinema community as it is part of the community where it resides. From the numerous educational and outreach programs, to the variety of film festivals and media programs it offers, it is so much more than just the screenings and the installations that they present. Just to highlight a few of the upcoming events - The New York International Children's Film Festival which begins this month The Reelabilities Film Festival that starts March 10th The Queens’ World Film Festival begins March 15th The Family Program that goes from March 4th to march 25th Theorizing The Web Conference 2018 beginning April 27th The Teen Digital Media Lab running now through March 18th

The ability for the museum to be a living breathing entity is due to the passion and dedication of Carl Goodman and his inspired staff at the museum.

Carl joined the museum in 1989. For the past 25 years he has served as an educator who oversaw a three-fold increase in the annual attendance following the museum's acclaimed expansion and reservation. Prior to 2011 Carl served as the museum's Senior Deputy Director working on all the public programming, education, and collection initiatives. He also supervised the museum’s use and the study of the emerging field of digital media. Call was responsible for the museum's innovative web projects that included: The Living Room - an online exhibition about the history of the presidential campaign commercials. The Digital Media Gallery -a collection of software-based art Real Virtuality - the inaugural exhibition in the expanded and renovated building.

Carl is also responsible for the museum’s Game Design Lab Program and the Summer Media Camp programs, inspiring the next generation of media creators and filmmakers in a fully immersive world of entertainment technology.

In addition to all his amazing work at the museum, Carl has served as the chair of the New York City Cultural Institution Group, which represents more than 30 museums and cultural organizations housed in New York City owned buildings. Additionally, he continues to serve as a member of the Art Education Committee of the New York Department of Education.

Carl is unable to be with us tonight due to a death in his family. On behalf of the board, we wish to extend our condolences. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Goodman family at their time of loss.

Accepting the award tonight for Patron of the Cinema on behalf of Carl Goodman’s is his esteemed colleague Sara Guerrero the Deputy Director of Education and Community engagement at the Museum of the Moving Image.
