Today’s Designer Spotlight falls on an insanely talented and hard working individual, @priya.ahluwalia1 creative director of @ahluwalia_studio .
Priya is creating a world where clothes do not just appear in the market, but are sourced from that same industry and transformed to reveal a story that would have otherwise been forgotten. By looking into the disregarded secret of our clothing cycle she found inspiration rather than disgust. Surprised that only 10% of clothes actually stay in charity shops, she turned her attention to Panipat, India, the global capital of recycling clothes and began her mission of sustainability with a cultural twist. Drawing on her Nigerian and Indian heritage as well as her British nationality, her pieces blend intricate designs and cuts of clothing inspired by the individuals she saw around her in these countries. She brought their style to the world of fashion while simultaneously erecting a stance on the ghastly effects of consumer spending and the clothing cycle. What is so important to us at Fantom Revival about Priya, is her acknowledgement of both diversity and sustainability in the creation of wearable art. As privileged consumers, we cannot ignore one for the sake of the other as we move forward with heightened awareness. We also hope to see many more brands earnestly incorporate these two features in the coming years as high fashion and popular culture merge more into the other.
