In present day, the Status Quo acts more like a charity organization dedicated to helping the environment, with their current primary goal being to rebuild Nevada after the war. Does that mean that they are moving away from the Machine—the reason of its existence?
No. Not really.
In fact, they are still very involved with the Machine, trying to upkeep the status quo, much like what they were doing during the madness.
The reason for this change of methods? The status quo between the Machine and the world has changed, especially after they discovered something peculiar about it:
The Machine is the avatar of the simulation everything takes place in. The simulation is alive, and is sentient.
Not only that, the Machine itself is changing. It is learning how to interact with the world’s inhabitants. Making friends, even.
The Status Quo decided to uphold this current status quo because the previous one is not very good, all things considered. And that includes making sure the world isn’t compromised.
After all, the Machine is the will of the simulation itself. And all it wants to do now is to hang out with his friends.
