Government in terms of the Police being a state organ for the protection of society are by law compelled to pay legal fees for the police. Bear in mind this is an enquiry not a trial. Ultimately the tax payer pays the bill, therefore the Unions who are the representatives of the miners should pay for the legal fees of miners. Had the government been made to pay for the fees of the miner families it would have been the taxpayer money. Bear in mind a huge sum of money will be expended to finalize this matter and all this comes from the fiscus, meaning the taxpayer.
