Coolest tidbits
Experts believe that languages can be learned in a cognizant level in just three months of intensive training.
There are numerous opportunities for people who want to learn a language outside of school (even without any cost!)
When starting a language, it is more difficult because the brain hasn’t yet realized that what you’re learning is a “language” or rather it doesn’t recognize it as such. This switch eventually happens that that’s what allows people to speak smoothly.
Learning a language strengthens your brain, literally! it physically changes
Daily study is critical
Speaking is also critical
Augmented reality
What is it?
· Combination of real and virtual content that is interactive, performs in real time, and is registered within the real world. There are numerous uses for augmented reality. It can be used for driving directions that visibly highlighting the desired route (from the driver’s perspective). to showcase suggested changes to a physical space, or even allow for realistic looking skype calls. Through augmented reality, users are able to experience information and ideas integrated into their physical space. No longer is a separate screen needed for difference devices and objects. Instead, the entire digital sphere becomes accessible in the physical world. Phone calls can be answered without picking up and phone and photos can be taken with the blink of an eye.
· Augmented reality adds graphics, sounds, haptic feedback and smell to the natural world as it exists.
Gamification + Augmented reality
The benefits of augmented reality are not just centered around novelty –the technology can increase the potential for conversational learning. Children have been observed to learn better in groups and augmented reality educational tools help to provide a more 3D focal point for students to gather around. Simulators, in general, allow us to learn how to do but normally not how to react. Simulators based on virtual and augmented reality can lead to a higher level experience in which the user can explore a large number of pieces and parts in detail "penetrating" in them in a way not possible in reality – for example, when visiting or exploring a jet engine. Virtual and augmented reality systems can provide an added feeling of presence and immersion of great value in education and training. If these requirements are met, the subjects may have cognitive and emotional experiences that can provide new insights into what they are studying. (http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/stamp/stamp.jsp?arnumber=6826187&tag=1)
It allows intuitively to bring the reality into study; • It provides emotional and cognitive experiences that involve students in the rational learning effort; • It gives correct information about the system according to the settings, which are relevant to test ideas and their feasibility; • It permits new ways of representing the reality under study.
Naomi's infographic was really interesting to me because my boyfriend is actually writing a research paper about the same subject right now. So seeing her visual representation was more interesting next to his research. She told an engaging story and moved through the elements and ideas in a logical way. I thought that her illustrations were clear and clean and definitely added to the communication without distracting from the words and ideas. The margins seemed consistant and her text sizes were a good standard.
The first day I participated a lot in the creation of the game (3h). Then we did mood boards (1h) but when the game totally changed (next class, 3h)there wasn’t a lot for me to do because Lizzie was doing the icons and I just didn’t prioritize the flowchart so I only started it(<1h). I developed the flowchart with Paige in class and I finished that and created the back sheet (5 h) then Paige sent me the list and I had to edit it (1h) then I put them into an InDesign doc to print, printed, but it hard errors. I’m not sure what I did wrong. My links got unlinked and I didn’t know. Bummer. (1h)
I’m a little bit unsure about the direction my thesis should go since my infographic is really just analyzing the users of duolingo. But the point I’m trying to make with my infographic is that duolingo is a popular, diverse, and effective language learning software that is growing every day.
I’m using the duolingo analytic for my infogrpahic (taken from their website) as well as some independent and in-house studies (also available on their website) to support the effectiveness of the tool.
