Temporary Project: A Day in the Life of Mr. Mush Stop Motion Animation: Part 1 - Morning/Afternoon (25/11/22)
Today I made another stop motion (SM) with Mush to show how the body experiences multiple temporary positions and gestures throughout the day. In the video Mush goes through his morning routine - getting up and ready. The lamp acts as his alarm clock. Then in the afternoon he sits with Laoise @k00280550 for Lunch.
This morning routine based SM animation was based off of a scene in the stop motion film 'Wallace and Grommet The Curse of the Ware Rabbit' (2005) by Aardman Studios (who I researched a few weeks ago). The scene shows Wallace and Grommits morning routing as they get ready for their day ahead.

Special thanks on behalf of myself and Mr. Mush to Laoise @k00280550 for taking part in the video.
This is by far the longest and the smoothest SM animation that I have made to date.
I plan on doing another video of Mr Mush's evening / night routine to continue exploring some of the temporary body positions and gestures we do throughout our daily lives.
Movement Through Time Project Week 6 - AMD (27/02/23)
My finished stop motion animation - 'Timequake' featuring Mr.Mush.
Movement Through Time Project - Week 3 - Stencil Printing (02/02/23)
Today I did another stencil print. This print is of Mr.Mush as he just came out of a time portal. It is based off of the animation that I made last week. I am really enjoying working with shapes, simplifying my images for the stencil process.
I chose the colour red as the background as it is often used to signal danger and as scientists consider time travel (moving through time) to be dangerous I thought it might suit well.
Background layer (layer 1) :
The print reminds me of an image from a comic book. It's striking and eye catching.
This is my second layered stencil print this week and I am finding that with practice my registering skills are getting better. There not quite there yet but practice makes perfect !
Movement Project: Week 2 - AMD - Task 4: Aesthetics Character and Background Development (26/01/23)
Character Design:
These are my plasticine characters :
Mr Mush (the main character)
Mush Sr. (Mr. Mush's deceased father - died in 1999)
Child Mush (Mr Mush as a child back in 1999)
Mush Sr. (Standing) and his son Mr.Mush sitting on the bench I made from cardboard looking at a nostalgic photograph
Child Mush:
Like the rest of the characters he has a wire armature and a Styrofoam head with plasticine body. They all have the family scarf and top hat. For making the figure I did some secondary research on Aardman Animation Studios and how they made their clay figures. In this video that is linked below the director of Morph (an Aardman character) - Merlin Crossingham gives a tutorial as to how he makes Morph.
Why are they called Mush, you may ask ? - Mr. Mush is named after my grandfather, whose legal name, believe it or not, is 'Mush'.
Background Design :
This animation will have two backgrounds due to the fact that the characters will be positioned opposite each other. Behind Mr. Mush will be an old cottage. this is a primary source photo that i tool when I went to visit the Bunratty folk park. The scene in front of him will be of Bunratty Castle. Instead of just simply using the photo of the castle that I took I am going to use the painting of the castle that I made last week during the painting elective (interdisciplinary links)
Final Story board :
Movement Through Time Project : Week 2 - AMD - Storyboarding My Claymation (24/01/23)
Storyboarding is a fantastic process to visualise your idea and finalise your decisions including camera angles/movement, the story, the duration of the event, etc.
As research and for guidance for this task I looked at the resources Paul Gardiner gave us - especially the guide by the director of the "Incredibles"(2004) and 'Ratatouille' (2007), Brad Bird, in which he gives tips for making effective storyboards and layouts
Here's my storyboard:
Location : Bunratty Castle
Characters : Mr.Mush, His Father, and child Mr.Mush in photograph
Event / plot - Mr Mush is seated on a bench across from Bunratty Castle. He is looking at a photo of himself and his not dead father outside of the Castle. Suddenly a timequake (like an earthquake but it disrupts time) occurs and his father is transported from a time during his existence to the present day. Both characters are bewildered. However before Mr mush has a chance to be reunited with his father another time quake occurs. The end - the viewer is left unsure as to whether or not Mr Mush got to hug his father before the time quake returned his father back to his original timeline (the past)
I will be using green screen for the first time when making this Animation.
Temporary Project: Assessment Display (09/12/22)
This week I hung and prepped some of my artworks to be displayed for assessment.
I have chosen these pieces as I feel that they best show my concept (temporary aspects of the Body)as well as my exploration of different medias throughout the project. I am showing:
A finger painting
A riso print
A plasticine sculpture
A stop motion animation
A Rotoscope Animation
A layered drawing
A wire sculpture
For my wire spine sculpture and my 2D pieces based on my scoliosis spine, I choose to hang them with nails as it resembles the nails in my spine.
For the riso print I am displaying I glued a sheet of black paper to the back of the print to make the white paper print pop more against the white wall and it helped to make the display more balanced as the riso is now the same size as the painting beside it.
And as for Mush, well, he will be eating a bag of popcorn like he is in the cinema, whilst watching one of the stop motion videos and the digital Rotoscope animation I made of him on my tablet. It is amazing how placing a figure on a plinth drastically elevates its status from a blob of plasticine to a work of art.
His chair is simply a recycled plastic lid from take away cup. I placed a layer of black card underneath Mush so that he doesn't get lost on the white plinth.
One of the lecturers - Eoin also mentioned how Mush and I, are like Alan Measles and Grayson Perry. Grayson Perry is an artist who has a teddy bear that he has named Alan Measles after the time when he suffered from Measles as a child and Alan the bear acted as his friend while he was ill, in a similar way to how Mush has become a friend to me.
Like how I use Mush to create my artworks so does Grayson Perry. He used his teddy bear as inspiration for many of his 3D sculptures
Temporary Project : Digital Animation Using Adobe Animate (24/11/22)
Today I made a digital animation inspired by disneys short film 'Going Home' and Pixars 'Up'.
In this Animation Mush displays the temporary human life cycle. He grows as he matures from a toddler to an adult. He then shrinks as he ages before he sadly dissapears as he passes away.
First I made a background on Adobe Photoshop . Then I made mushs characters and brought him over to adobe animate where I used motion tweening to grow and shrink his body
This is a far more detailed animation that my heart and Lungs one I made on Tuesday - practice makes perfect. I am very happy with this Animation especially given that I have only been using Adobe Animate since this Monday. However I am very sad to see Mush pass away. Don't worry he will be back !
