The Other Bennet Sister (2026)
Mary Bennet with William Ryder and Tom Hayward — The Other Bennet Sister, 1x08 (2026)
Horny Mary
It's not urgent
AN ICON 💅💅💅
i was rewatching the dinner party scene and i am kicking my feet and giggling about how mr. hayward and mr. ryder look across the table at mary. they are so transparent istg
mr. ryder looks at her with surprised wonder, admiration, and amusement. he has always been charmed into delight and surprise with her and is undoubtedly fascinated with her when she does something of note or shock.
mr. hayward is something else. for one, they depict him looking to her first. and often! he glances over at her twice before she starts succeeding and garnering the attentions of others. it is almost like he is drawn to her and cannot help but wonder how she is getting on. wants to know what she is talking about. wonders what it would be like to be in that conversation with her, next to her. when she starts succeeding, he is not just happy. he is proud. he had full confidence in her the entire time. he smiles into his glass and the way he goes to take a sip, you can almost feel from the screen how his heart skips a beat (dónal finn you wickedly talented son of a gun). he does actually relax when she is obviously succeeding and getting on but gets pretty immediately distracted by mr. ryder's open admiration of mary and that happy settled mood he feels goes pretty cattywampus right away. you can literally see the overthinking thoughts in his head as both his eyes and smile drop.
LAURIE DAVIDSON as MR. RYDER in
— The Other Bennet Sister
People have said that Mr Ryder wasn't really into Mary and that he only liked her bc she represented a challenge but I've got to disagree. I think he genuinely wanted her. Look at the way that he looks at her! He is so PROUD to be on Mary's arm!
And it's not just a crush, or Mr Ryder enjoying the chase. If any else had broken his dad's glass jar, he would have been pissed. Mary did it, and he was all smiles. Insisting that it was okay? William has his pick of options and women, why would he run all over the place looking for Mary and trying to impress her and her family if he wasn't serious? When Mary rejects him twice this was his reaction every time:
Is this the face of a man that just saw Mary as a plaything to pass the time? Mr Ryder desperately wanted to marry Mary in my opinion, and yes he did fuck up with the Italy proposal, but I always thought he intended to pop the question in Italy.
