Where does optimus prime's trailer go?

I was gonna comment on how in the previous series (TFP) he didn’t have one, and how, actually, in Robots in Disguise 2015, he’s got one that’s a part of him, but 

NO, that is some fucking bullshit, I’ll believe Optimus is stuck in goddamn ghostland, I’ll believe this is a giant sentient alien mantruck who, in tfp, may or may not have been teen-pregnant jesus, but I refuse to goddamn believe his entire trailer shrinks down to be his shoulderpiece or some-fucking-thing, this is going TOO FAR.

…anyway, the usual answer is “subspace.” It’s just the anime concept of hammerspace, but for robots. Where’s Optimus’s trailer when he doesn’t need it? Subspace. Why can Megatron shrink down to the size of a hand-held human pistol? His extra mass goes into subspace. It’s pretty much one-size-fits-all and absolutely underwhelming and I am still mad that this cartoon tricked me into thinking something almost made sense for 2 whole minutes

I looked at the mud/quicksand stuff and I tried to find a way to make this sexy to me, but I just can't muster up anything besides a neutral noise

maybe from the angle of someone getting all trapped and helpless, but even then, quicksand seems like way too specific
