His head is pounding. His tongue feels both dry and like the final resting place for something rotten, which it might be, judging by the taste in his mouth. Michael rolls his neck, forehead pressing into the wafer-thin pillow provided in his cell. Are there normally pillows? He can't remember. Michael can't even think clearly enough to remember what happened last night. He knows alcohol was had, and maybe a little acetone in between. There was a lot of physical activity judging by the way his entire body aches. When Michael sits up to investigate the split knuckles and ache suggesting a bruise forming on his jaw, it speaks of brawling instead of fucking. That kind of night then. Could be worse.

After Caulfield and Max's death, Michael hits rock bottom and then just keeps on digging. Alone in the world, how the hell can he dig himself back out? In which, Michael Guerin learns to trust; other people and himself.

comment: this is a “michael is a total mess post-season one” fic. it’s a malex fic but at its heart, it’s a michael fic. i honestly just like fics where michael pulls himself together for himself, where he realises he has friends and doesn’t have to push people away. the malex is a wonderful bonus! the flirting is very sweet and it never feels as though one of them is earning the other; they’re just working on their own stuff separately and working their way back to each other. mansikka always writes heartwarming malex, plus there’s a (pre season two) buffy cameo!!

Why did anyone think it would be easy?

Sure, he was in love. Limitless undying love which shined around him like a million suns and fuck the Beatles for providing him with the kind of overblown metaphors that leapt too readily to mind these days. He was in love. But for ten long years love had done his heart no favors when it taught him to crawl over blasted glass and fill his emptiness with broken things. Twenty-eight was too old to be young again, so why did people expect love to make him replete?

His new life was hammered out along the exposed, unforgiving lines of a brutalist architecture. Up a lover, down a brother. Friends and family, distinctly articulated and grouped together in a unified whole. Him and Alex, the raw and unpretentious honesty of their two-in-oneness.

There was nothing easy about it.

comment: i was a fool to think that satellites gone would remain my fave anonymous fic, that it would remain the most emotionally traumatising for me (in a good way, of course). i’m always happy to be wrong if it means more amazing fics like this though, because anonymous gone and done it again. this one is.... whoo. it’s heavy, folks. heavy in good good themes, beautiful descriptions, ridiculous boys, fantastic michael guerin characterisation, sex and love and talking and missing the point and insane rides through the ship console that left me stuttering for breath at the end. there’s no shying away from the hard topics in anonymous’ fics, which sometimes i hate but mostly i appreciate and love. i always leave anonymous’ fics heavy with emotion, not always happy per-say but always to-the-bone satisfied. this one’s no exception. it might actually be the perfect example. there isn’t an emotional story beat it creates that it doesn’t answer for you at some point. happy, sad, content, amazed; all i know is you gotta get over there and read this bad boy.

Bad boy. Over the years it had been hurled at him time and time again, both in sneer and in seduction. The persona had become home for his fears, his dreams, his secrets, his love - a smothering shelter, always near bursting at the seams. It's time Michael Guerin found a new home.

Inspired by the pilot script calling Michael “a bad boy but a good man”. Canon compliant.

comment: this is such an interesting character exploration of michael, with some soft (and hot and heavy) scenes between michael and alex. it starts slow at the beginning, with snapshots throughout michael’s life, leading up to post 1x13 stuff. i love the scenes with alex and the pod squad; i wish the show would explore this dynamic in season two!! the last few snapshots of malex are so sweet and i think it’s so fitting to end the fic on these because that’s the journey the fic’s taken you through. michael’s not a bad man or a bad boy; he’s good, alex knows that, and this fic captures that brilliantly.
