“Welcome to Espresso Yourself. What can I get for you, handsome?” a smooth tenor voice pulled Stephen out of his phone just as he’d hit send on the message.

Blinking, he stared across the counter at a man who appeared to be in somewhere in his forties, if the few pristine white hairs tinseled through his goatee and dark brown hair had anything to say about it. Stephen tucked his phone into his pocket while he just stared, his first thought being that this guy – unless he was the manager – looked entirely out of place in a job meant for teens and early 20-somethings trying to save up for a car or groceries or a trip home for the holidays after their semesters were over for the winter holiday.

Death is in her house.

Val knows it as she wakes; it's in the silence, in the cold breeze swirling in under the door, in the goosebumps rising on her flesh as she reaches for the glock under her pillow. As she leaves the bedroom, her hand automatically brushes the empty space where another used to sleep. She drifts through her tiny London flat like a ghost, sweat cooling on her forehead. Thor had warned she would come. Thor had been warning for nearly eight years.

A dark shape crouches in the kitchen. Val swallows a scream and points her gun.

Hela straightens up, her pale face half-illuminated by the light of the fridge. ‘Do you have any butter?’

‘What are you doing in my house?’ she demands.

Those soft, full lips smile slightly. ‘I’m making a sandwich.’ She holds up a butter knife and indicates a plate with two slices of bread on the counter.

For a moment, Val can only stand there in disbelief and marvel at the absurdity of the situation: herself, in pyjamas with bare feet and a gun, and Hela, the assassin she’s hunted for her entire career at MI5, making a snack in her kitchen.
