Something in the Rain - “A Month Apart, Part 1”
A/N: Hi everyone, thank you for your patience as I whipped out this chapter. I had the initial outline on how this chapter will go but more frequent than none, it changes a lot in the middle while I'm in the writing process. :) I love this story and I hope it just gives you the good feels while reading this. We're two years into this pandemic and the world is still crazy. I hope you're keeping safe and being kind to yourself. :) As always, your comments and suggestions are very much welcome.
A modern day meet cute instance between Jamie and Claire.

XXXXX
After their first date, their schedule for the following two weeks we’re packed - with Jamie settling back in the firm after his 2-week trip from London and Claire’s schedule at the hospital and preparing for her trip to Seattle.
Being a lawyer and a doctor weren’t the most flexible jobs - with patients and clients to attend to, surgeries and hearings to prepare for, plus, with both of them in administrative positions, it is additional work on top of their normal duties. But Claire and Jamie were determined to make it work, so they decided to communicate better, be extra patient and understanding, and really commit whatever available time they had.
The first week, Jamie couldn’t make lunch as he had a court hearing to prepare for and Claire couldn’t make dinner as she was on the night shift. So Jamie, one day, surprised Claire outside the hospital by picking her up, invited her to quick breakfast dates instead, and dropping her off at her house to make sure she got home safe.
The second week was a bit lighter but with Claire going to Seattle on Saturday, she had to do extra administrative work to make sure everything was set for her leave. She offered to have dinner takeaways at her office in the evenings which he happily accepted.
The night before her flight, Claire and Jamie were hanging out in her office, sitting at the sofa, admiring the Edinburgh skyline with a little wine and cheese tray.
The Shelter Chapter 3 Mrs. Fitz
He directs her into a small office. The lady at the desk raises at their entrance. Her blond almost white hair is cut into a bob. Her eyes are kind. “Mrs. Fitz, Claire Beauchamp.” Jamie introduces them.
“Come Claire. Have a seat. Thank you Jamie.” He gives them a smile and starts out.
“Wait. Does he have to go?”
“Aye lass, he does. For your privacy.”
“I will be about Claire. I will be in the living area. Helping the bairns with their homework.”
“Thank you Jamie.” Mrs. Fitz echoes her.
“So, Mr. Fraser made a grand impression?”
“He is very good at greeting.” She softly says. Adjusting herself on the folding chair that sits across from the lady's desk, she looks up and sees her eyes are full of speculation..
“Aye he is. So Claire, tell me what brought you here.” She does, telling her all she had told Jamie.
“I am sorry your ex was such a bastard. I am glad you came to us. I have seen a lot in my over twenty years running this place and most lasses in your situation make the shelter their last stop after trying the streets and strange men. They arrive more broken then they need be. I know it wasn’t where you expected to end up but, you are safe here. We will see you back on your feet.”
“I truly thank you Mrs. Fitz.”
“You are welcome. Now I need to tell you what you can expect from us and us from you.”
“The rules.” Said with a smile.
“Aye the rules. Number one, there is no alcohol or drug use. Period. A daily drug screen is done. You fail you are out. If you have prescription drugs they will be locked up with our nurse and handed out as prescribed.”
“I don’t. Never done any drugs.”
“Good. Number two, there is no sexual activity on campus. Outside, well, I am nae your mam, do as you will, as long as you make curfew. But not bar hand holding and hugs here. A kiss that doesn’t get out of control and not witnessed by the bairns is also okay.”
“I can't imagine wanting a man right now but, I promise if I do, we will take it away from here.”
“All we ask. Curfew is at nine pm. Unless you are working or attending school. If so, I need a copy of the schedule. Miss more then one curfew, you are out. Oh, unless you arrange it prior with me, a family event or something.”
“My ex was the last of my family. “confessed with lowered head.
“Tis' hard I ken. But my door is always open. I am an excellent listener.”
She looks up and gives her a small smile.
“Everyone over the age of five has an assigned job. With the new guests, we usually start out in the kitchen or laundry.”
“I am good at both.” Mrs. Fitz nods.
“We require daily showers. I don’t believe you will have a problem with that but it is on my list,” this earned her a bigger smile. Good. “We provide all that is needed for them including shower shoes. Use them. Trust me.” She moves her papers around. “Everyone most attend group therapy. It is offered at different times. So those working or attending school can attend. Individual therapy once a month or more as needed. Financial planning classes are also required. We offer others you don't need. Parenting classes, NA and AA. If you feel you need something we don’t have, please ask me about it. Our goals, or mandate, is to see our guests, self sufficient and in their own homes in a years time. We succeed 80 percent of the time. I am quiet proud of that.
“You should be. A year is more then enough time. My lab tech classes are three months. I will then be working and able to save towards a place.”
“A solid plan. I will help you everyway I know how.”
Claire bites at her lips as tears fill her eyes. Mrs. Fitz comes around and draws her into her arms. “Weep it out love. Tears are healing and you have earned them..
