Hi, Anon, I’ve answered this question before, but I’m happy to answer it again. NO, SAM AND CAIT HAVE NEVER DATED. How do I know this with such certainty? Because way back in 2014, I had an industry source who was good friends with one of Cait’s besties, and she also had professional dealings with Sam, and she gave me the inside scoop. This is who I refer to as my “original industry source.” She’s on Twitter and IG with a blue check by her name and is 100% legit.
This source is the reason I stopped shipping Sam and Cait. Since I knew she was a real insider and an identifiable industry person, when she told me Sam and Cait were not, nor did they ever date, I knew it was true. She had no horse in the race, and had no reason to lie. I had many conversations with her about it. She shared with me in detail the times she had been with Sam in business meetings in L.A. and N.Y. And then the separate times she had hung out with Cait and Cait’s bestie in L.A. and N.Y. She had multiple dealings with BOTH Cait and Sam, and told me things only an insider would have access to knowing, IOW, she is someone credible. When she told me that Sam and Cait were never a couple, since I still shipped them at the time, of course I was disappointed. But I put on my big girl panties and accepted REALITY. It’s called being an adult. Anyhoo...to reiterate, here is what she told me...
I mentioned to her that Sam and Cait were so flirty, and touchy-feely with each other, and the fact that they had said they had watched “The Wedding” episode while drinking a couple of bottles of wine had me thinking “There’s no way those two didn’t f*ck.” But she reminded me that actors are a different breed and most are touchy-feely, but they know it doesn’t mean anything. She also said that since she had hung out with Cait and Sam, other industry people, and other mutual friends on a few occasions, she’d seen with her own eyes that they were both super charming and natural flirts. My source said Sam even asked her out for a drink (his exact words were “a wee dram”) the next time she was in Scotland. Of course it never happened, but the point is that Sam still did that and he barely knew my source--but saying that to her came naturally. That’s just how he is. He’s a people-pleaser and a charmer. Nothing wrong with that. In addition, she said her friend told her that Sam was not Cait’s type at all and Cait was not Sam’s type. But that they were both consummate actors, had great chemistry, and were both trying to promote the hell out of Outlander, since it was the big break for both of them. And that their interactions together were born out of mutual fondness as friends and costars and a desire to see Outlander succeed aka they agreed to lay it on thick to ensure their show was a hit. Again, nothing unusual about two actors SELLING their work. It’s the name of the game: SHOWBUSINESS.
At the time, when they first started filming Outlander in late 2013, Cait was not yet dating Tony. So both Cait and Sam were single when they first started on Outlander, yet they did not date...or anything else. Cait started dating Tony around March of 2014, AFTER Outlander filming had started. She could have dated Sam, but she didn’t. Anyone not wearing shipper goggles can see from past history, that Cait’s type is wavy haired brunette artsy hipsters, predominantly in the music industry (her ex, Dave Milone and Tony look very similar). She has not deviated from that. Sam has mostly dated petite, sporty, young blondes. These are the facts. People can choose to ignore them, but the facts remain.
In summary: My original industry source told me CATEGORICALLY and with 100% certainty that Sam and Cait had never been involved romantically, sexually or in any way shape or form outside of being costars and good friends. She knows this because she is good friends with one of Cait’s female besties. Literally, one degree of separation. The naysayers will argue that Cait may not have told her bestie everything, but she told her she saw Sam as a “bro.” And that Sam’s focus was his career and going to the gym. At the time, Cait wasn’t famous, Outlander hadn’t taken off, it would have been one friend talking in confidence to another friend, there is no reason why Cait wouldn’t have divulged to her bestie if she was sleeping with Sam. Cait didn’t know her friend would share it with anyone. People love to spill secrets, so it’s not unusual that her friend would have confided in my source and told her “shhhh, but don’t tell anyone.” The world’s top secrets have been revealed with those ubiquitous words, “shhhh, but don’t tell anyone.” And the reality is, I haven’t revealed the identity of my source, nor the identity of which of Cait’s friends this is.
Soooo, Anon, hard as it is to believe, things between Sam and Cait have ALWAYS been platonic. And now, Cait is a married woman--Mrs. McGill, so it’s really a moot point. Thanks for stopping by!
