Today I learned I can shoot. Well, any idiot can shoot, that's kind of part of the whole gun problem, but I mean, I'm actually good at it. Like, scary good. And it's weird because it feels good to be really good at something here? I'm pretty middle of the pack on the physical stuff, all the running and push-ups and wall climbing and whatever, but this, I'm great at.

Becoming an airman had been an anti-goal until that day in the shed. When Alex subsequently finds himself in Basic Training, he resolves to make the best of the situation. But he never quite lets go of his first love. A story told in glimpses of a young man's life, spanning a decade and beyond.

comment: tas is incredibly good at telling a story in snapshots. coupled with the romance of written letters, and the beauty of the last scene, this fic is sweet and devastating in equal measures. i love the thought of alex keeping michael close like this, keeping in touch with him, even if it couldn’t be a reality.

Michael had never expected to be able to leave. Not after three bodies in the desert and the echoing crunch of fibreglass and metal. Not when that night crystallised the need to stay. To protect.

But Isobel didn't need his protection anymore. She'd fought so hard to cleanse herself of Noah's taint, and she'd done it, come out the other side stronger than ever.

The alien dust has settled, life is going on, and Michael is going on vacation.

comment: these boys deserve a holiday, and the description of michael’s vacation absolutely warmed my heart. i loved the set-up of this, how roswell is safe and secure, and michael feels untethered. the lovely way that malex come together is also so wonderful and heart-warming and alex’s rehearsed-to-a-point speech is so in character i laughed out loud.

comment: it feels like so long since i’ve seen a good ol’ 100 word drabble series, which is why it was so cool to see this pop up over at ao3 for the cosmic love exchange! tas does two things very well; her approach to writing nsfw works, and painting a vivid picture with just a few words. this small series is a testament to just how spectacularly these two things combine. everything is very nsfw, and brilliant snapshots in the sexual lives of alex and michael. just brilliant.

millie’s long list of malex fics | Through the Violet Glass by Tasyfa

When Alex finds a strange glass object, he feels as though the mystery of its existence is part of what Jim Valenti bequeathed to him, and he needs to know more about it. What he finds out changes everything.

Canon compliant through the end of S01E05, plus the high school flashbacks from S01E06, then it diverges. Character-driven with lots of dialogue and a slow burn plot. Alternates between Michael POV and Alex POV as the primary pairing but everybody shows up eventually. 

comment: god, did i not say we were blessed with amazing novel length fics in this fandom? tasyfa’s masterpiece is no exception. when i first came across this beauty i must have consumed the first thirty chapters or so in one go. i still get excited when i see that it’s updated! there are some crazy emotional scenes in the later chapters, one in particular that i won’t spoil but it’s a whole-group kind of scene and it absolutely blew my breath away. the themes are treated so tenderly and the characterisation is so wonderful. the best part is that there’s now 90k (and counting) there for you to read. what are you waiting for?!

millie’s long list of malex fics | Let Your Feet Run Wild by Tasyfa

Alex caught him looking. "And what are you thinking?"

"Same thing as when I fell asleep last night. You're fucking beautiful." Michael saw no reason not to tell him, and he was rewarded with a hint of colour appearing in Alex's face.

"Well, thank you. You're not so bad yourself," he returned the compliment with a smile..

The continued adventures of the musician and the engineer: Michael's learned something new about himself and he'd like to know more.

comment: this masterpiece is a sequel to Queen West at Night so make sure you read that beauty first!! it’s another of the fics that i deem “communication porn” because although it does contain a fair amount of smut (well-written, sexy without going overboard), i would consider it’s main attraction the communication between michael and alex. it’s totally au, no aliens and such, so the AU setting is already fascinating in itself. in this sequel, alex basically starts to walk michael through a d/s relationship, which michael finds totally desirable and which also helps him to explain some of his history. that aspect of the fic is honestly just so interesting and informative and written in a way that doesn’t make it boring or clinical to read. i love the way the characters negotiate and discuss (always discussing!!) their boundaries, whilst the author still manages to maintain a fun and flirty fic. (also; there’s background maribel for fans of that particular ship!) check those tags before you dive in but other than that; get on it!!!
