Ms. Smythe (????-2237)
Stay safe. And remember: Mind the Gap
so I'm zooming around the House of Commons in flycam, looking at all the different Smythes, and it seems pretty normal right, par for the course.
THEN BAM
COUNT BINFACE RIDES AGAIN
Smythe seeing that her latest cloned self is hate-fucking the dirty, irradiated Vagabond that caused her escape in the first place:
I just realised that I know of two characters with out of control egos who set out to rule their respective nations because they're the only competent ones, but are also huge fucking nerds who are Gamers into 40k style games.
Johanna Hezenkoss and Agent Smythe, you two should have a game night sometime. It'd give everyone else a break from you.
Love thinking about the ethical implications of FOLON's ending when you side with anyone but Angel.
You have a whole parliament of Smythes. Roughly a hundred of them, all with the same mind, morals and beliefs. If you let even one of them go, they'll pick right up where they left off. All they need is one lab and one vat and they'll get right back to cloning and conditioning more Smythes to resume manipulating London.
The Fifth Column I could see as deciding to just execute them as they represent everything wrong with the Old World, but Camelot would be split on the issue, with some in favour of executing them before they can become a threat again and others in favour of a trial because outright killing them sets a bad precedent for their future democracy.
And that's not getting into how the Wayfarer's reputation is affected by the revelation of their being another Smythe clone. While their closest associates might still trust them with their lives, those who know less would definitely harbour suspicion—what if this is all a trick by Smythe to alter the balance of power without giving up control? How can we trust that this clone really is different from the rest? The conspiracy theories going around after Parliament of Fools must be insane.
Smythe: I have the utmost respect for the systems of governance in place, I just don't trust anyone but me to do the job correctly Smythe: so I have appointed multiple clones of myself to every seat an MP could hold, and the Speaker of the House is a robot that has no actual say in governance Smythe: this is a reasonable compromise to the problems with Parliament :) Abigail: ...I think just declaring yourself supreme dictator of England would have somehow said less about your control issues
I was debating naming Smythe 'Isla' after her VA, but 'Cassandra' would be so in-keeping with her trying to get the world to pay attention and realise the threat of a nuclear apocalypse, only to go ignored and oops now the world's gone up in flames.
So it turns out that I may have glitched my way into an area you're only meant to access when working for Angel, because I found a big old mittenlurk called Reggie that I couldn't interact with and he's apparently part of that questline.
Anyways Smythe's justifications for everything she does is 'I don't trust anyone who's not me to not make stupid decisions' and yet in one lab, Angel has a Human of Theseus experiment going on (systematically replacing a human with robot bits until its all robot), another has a reputation for being where the crazies work and experiment on each other when they're bored, and in another they're putting human brains in big mutant crabs. Like come on love, that's not saving the world, that's screwing around and screwing other people over for a laugh.
