i just witnessed Percy Jackson & the Lightning Thief: The Musical for the first time ever in my life and-

the production was held by a high school and the effects were certainly that of a high school production. but the music??? the acting??? ive listened to the original soundtrack from the broadway show or whatever the fuck its called, so i knew what i was getting myself into but i didnt know. seeing it in person is, in fact, so much worse than just listening to audio recordings i am telling you now if you yourself have not seen this musical. luke's renditions of percy's "good kid" at the end? dont fucking touch me rn. "and maybe if id been a little bit-" i was not prepared for that. the actors did such amazing jobs. they were truly fantastic and i will praise them until i die. ALSO

Hades??? they made him so sassy and dramatic and he was wearing a sparkly purple tuxedo and i just. i love him. he can do no wrong. he was a fucking mood okay. i dont know if any of his lines were stuff the highschool decided to add to the play to spice things up and i dont really care. i have found my favorite rendition of hades. Dramatic Boi

It just pisses me off that Ms. Darbus never got to sing a single song in any of the High School Musical movies.

Day Ninety-Five

So, if you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you’ll know that my APUSGOV students have had Q&A sessions with some really cool guests: elected officials, candidates, staffers, etc... This weekend I tagged everyone who’s running for the presidency in a tweet that said I teach government to 18-year-olds in NH, and they should visit us.

I didn’t think I’d get any responses, BUT I DID.

So we’ll see what happens.

In class today we went over the midterm, watched The West Wing (”He Shall, from Time To Time”), and discussed some current events: SOTU, the budget fight, Venezuela... It was a good class. 

In World, students did some group work to learn about Middle Eastern culture. They had a set of questions on various topics (art, clothing, poetry, jewelry, food and table manners). Each student in the group had an article about one of the topics, so between them, they could answer all the questions. It’s a simple assignment, but they seemed to enjoy it, and they had lots of good questions afterwards. They got a bit competitive, too, about which group could get all the answers first. I’m okay with that.

I linked it all back to last class by pointing out how much the “Big 3″ religions had influenced these other aspects of culture. Then I lectured on Judaism and Christianity (history and basic teachings); they’re reading about Islam for homework. More on that next class.

I had students come to do make-up work during my prep, then went to Ms. D’s room to help her enter her midterm grades on PowerSchool. That didn’t take long, so I had time to do my grading before the bell. It was just starting to snow when I left the building.

We’re supposed to get a foot by morning!

Day Eighty-Five

This morning my APUSGOV students wrote me an on-demand essay about whether or not there are sufficient checks on the power of the federal bureaucracy. I haven’t graded them yet- that’s how I’ll be spending my prep time tomorrow- so I’m curious how they’re going to answer that. This is a new assessment, and I think I’m going to keep it. I liked the lessons I did to get the students ready for it, and they’ll do lots of similarly structured on-demand essays in college, so I think it’s good. I’ll know for sure when I grade.

I wasn’t sure my World lesson was going to go because I’d rearranged it so many times, and I’d seen so many students acting wild before coming to class (lots of subs in the building... it happens). I thought it might be a struggle to get them to focus, but it wasn’t, really. And the lesson was actually awesome. I’m particularly pleased by how many questions I got; it’s always good when students want additional information.

So, first, I showed a video about the current conflict cluster in central Africa (South Sudan, C.A.R., Lake Chad Basin) to give students a basic idea what the wars there are like, and what they’re about. After that, they worked in groups to tackle a set of articles explaining how regional instability, weapons trafficking, and terrorism (all things we’ve been discussing in past classes) are making the wars worse. Then I threw in some info about climate change, drought, and famine, too, because the puzzle would not be complete otherwise. Once they grasped all that- which is a lot, so I’m wicked impressed- we talked about the U.S. role, and how much our choices resonate beyond our borders. I closed class with a minute to spare by saying that next time we’ll look at what’s being done- by us and others- to help the people in this conflict cluster.

The Principal asked me to take on mentoring another new teacher- Ms. D, a late addition to our faculty this quarter- so I met with her during my prep time to go over our grading program, upcoming midterms, and so on... I think she’ll do well; she just needs to learn how to do some of the non-instructional things. It’s easy enough to explain that.

At practice, it was all about the relays, and perfecting the passes. The kids are excited about post-season, especially the rookies, so these next few weeks are going to be fun!
