What February 21st Means To Me?

It’s funny how much can change within a year – this time last year I was just starting my makeup program at George Brown College and I was not the person that I am today. I was a person that over time had crawled into a shell, almost never laughed and was only brought out when it was time to put on an act. I was a person that hid the fact that she liked to watch baseball, hockey and wrestling, but also enjoyed just being a girl. I like putting on makeup, I like doing my hair and my nails. I like getting dressed up to go somewhere just because I can, but the shell that I was last year couldn’t show that – she felt the need to hide a lot of things that just didn’t need to be hidden.

She didn’t want to be judged or ridiculed because sadly it had all happened before. Want to go to see an action movie on a first date instead of some rom-com that you really didn’t want to see in the first place, oh well – that’s not what girls do. Like listening to classic rock, but also like listening to Carrie Underwood and One Direction – you’re a walking contradiction. You like watching trashy reality TV to melt your brain after a long day, but aren’t you the same person that just spent the last four days watching documentaries on the Romanov Empire – that doesn’t make any sense. You like watching Supernatural, but also like watching Disney movies – why don’t you just grow up. All of those things made her a shell until one day, I took the leap and went back to school to do something else with my life and you know what, I’m no longer that shell.

I took that leap and I met amazing people:

@nicoleerinmua – Thank you for keeping me on my toes during our hair class and during makeup two. Thank you for challenging me, but also never once questioning that I am who I am. You are absolutely amazing both as a person and as a makeup artist. I hope to work with you sometime in my future because I always need the challenge that you offer. Love you!

@jocelyncosmetics – You are an amazing person inside and out with a one of a kind personality that I love. You never had a mean word to say about anybody. You pushed yourself through your frustrations in hair and showed me a strength that I almost lost in myself. Thank you because without that strength I would have given up last year. Love you!

@beautytrix.ca – Where do I even start? I mean, you have more strength in your one hand than some people do in their entire bodies. You were a light in a storm of voices that never wanted to shut up and a venting board when I needed it the most. You are my very own personal peanut gallery that can read and speak my thoughts before I even have to say them. You are an amazing person that I always want to have in my life because while this year I lost three friends that I once considered sisters, you are worth all them and more. You are quite literally the sister I never had and thank you for that. Love you!

@justkatemua – Thank you for everything, thank you for being the sounding board that I needed when everything just seemed to be falling apart at the seams, thank you for being the shoulder that I needed to lean on when times got tough and thank you for the being the laugh that I needed to hear to let me know that it was okay to smile again. Thank you for becoming my other sister. Thank you for our early morning talks that I still miss and thank you for showing me a confidence that I needed to be shown that I once had lost. Love you!

@jubondmua – I don’t know where I would be today without our early morning talks standing outside George Brown on the cold winter mornings or those hot summer ones. You had the same amazing dedication to the program that I had even though it took me until November to finish it, while it took you just six or seven months. You are an amazing person that is so easy to talk to and even though we never got to share a class together, I feel like I got to know you more than some of the other girls that I did share a class with. I hope to work with you in the near future. Love you!

@madeupbypriya – You bring out the mom in me and I don’t know why because I see you as more of a little sister than I do as a daughter that I don’t yet have. You are an amazing little spitfire that keeps me laughing (even if it may have been while I was shaking my head). I don’t know where we’ll be five years from now when I’m almost thirty and you’ll be the same age that I am while writing this, but I do hope you’re still in my life. Love you!

@_nadi.104 – I don’t think I have laughed more than I have with you. You are an amazing light and don’t ever let anyone take that away from you because everyone, and I do mean, everyone needs a Nadi in their life. You are a beautiful soul inside and out and I think the world is a much better place with you in it. Love you!

@ouitsana – You beautiful, beautiful soul, you. Always a kind word for everyone, a smile that can light up a room and the lack of filter that can make anyone laugh on their darkest of days. You are an amazing talent and an amazing person that I wish I could keep in my back pocket, but I’d rather share you with the rest of the world, because it’s a better place with you just being you. Love you!

@emzy_baby101 – Another one who brings out the mom in me, but you’re amazing all the same, always good for a laugh, even if it might cause me some grey hairs later on. Yep, that’s right I said it, you’ve given me some grey hair that I didn’t have before this year, but as my mother said, if you don’t have grey hair, it’s because you’re not living. Thank you for the laughs. Love you!

@christiekmakeup – I have never met a kinder soul that doesn’t have a judgemental bone in her body. You have a talent that is unmatched and I can’t wait to see what you do with it especially when it collides with your willingness to try new things. The want you have to always make yourself better at what you do will make you a juggernaut in this business and I can’t wait to see where that takes you either. Love you!

@cassalesia – The full-Italian to my half-Greek. It was almost like finding a kindred soul when we met because it was finally nice to have a Cassandra in my life that understood what it meant to have family from the Mediterranean and watch soccer as much as I watch hockey. I’m still sorry about the Italians not qualifying for the FIFA world cup this year, hopefully next year. Your work ethic is amazing and don’t ever lose that – it will get you far and hopefully we’ll be able to work together soon. Love you!

@__tmxcs – You’ve never let me leave a room without laughing even if it may have been by calling me “Mom” – I never had to be the mom friend with you though, so I knew it was always our little joke. Thank you for that though because without those laughs it would have been a very long trip home especially with the pain that I was once in. Thank you for always trying challenge yourself, because while I sometimes played it safe in class, it gave me a confidence to get out of that box, even it was just on the weekends or on my own face. Love you!

@mua.mina – Ah Mina Ballerina you lovable soul. Thank you for the laughs and your understanding nature. Thank you for just being you and letting me be me. It was amazing getting to know you in my last class at George Brown and I can’t wait to work with you sometime soon. Love you!

Thank you once again ladies for being people who don’t judge that instead of a rom-com I’d rather see the latest Fast & Furious movie, that on Monday and Tuesday nights I watch WWE, I watch hockey and cheer on not only the Toronto Maple Leafs, but the Dallas Stars, that baseball and the Toronto Blue Jays have had my heart since I came into this world in 1993, that my music tastes ranges, but doesn’t define me, that doing my hair, my nails, my makeup is me being me during the day before I go home to watch reality TV because it turns my brain off enough that I can fall asleep. That Supernatural and Disney movies use to be my hiding place, but now I can watch them purely for enjoyment.
